These strange people have various chivalrous attributes, which distinguish them from all other Africans. They invariably send notice to their adversaries that they are about to attack them; they spare their prisoners; and there is no such thing among them as treachery or stabbing behind. Their tribal battles are a series of duels, man to man, and they fight to the death. The women, knowing that they are perfectly safe, encourage their menkind with shrill cries.

In introducing his book Hinde notes:

"The rebellion at the coast, under M'Baruk, rendered it impossible to furnish the Sub-Commissioner of the district with the necessary police or troops, and his own police force on a peace footing was absolutely inadequate to deal with the disturbances, or to punish the armed bands who had been causing so much trouble. It was, therefore, decided to invite the Masai under our protection to assist the Government police. To this they made immediate response, and with a thousand Masai to scout and guard the flanks, an expedition shortly reduced the surrounding country to submission.

"A few months later, when a military company was stationed at Machakos, the rebels further afield were subdued by a combined military and police force, assisted by over a thousand Masai warriors. On these two occasions I worked with and amongst the Masai, and was greatly impressed by their fine physique, manly bearing and response to discipline; and when later I was appointed Resident to the Masai chief and Collector of Masailand, the opportunity of becoming acquainted with the life of this interesting people presented itself."

About the author:

Sidney Langford Hinde was born July 23, 1863 and died October 18, 1930. All these qualities he obviously possessed in a high degree. He appears to have been harshly treated by the British East Africa authorities. Doubtless much that he did was grossly misrepresented to them by more or less interested parties. He certainly did yeoman's service to the colony in its early days by opening up an unknown and hostile country which lay right on the borderland of the Uganda Railway, at that time in course of construction. Roger Stoakley travelled widely into remote areas of the country over a period of many years, while setting up a fund for destitute children. What he found is a revelation. He describes in compassionate and often humorous detail a society torn between the trappings of a modern state and a multitude of die-hard tribal customs and traditions that are difficult to reconcile. The joys and sufferings of the traditional and often impoverished families that the fund was designed to help are portrayed in vivid colours, together with Roger's experiences while living with them. Through Kenyan Doors shows how, as a result of colonial rule, widely differing peoples of Cushitic, Nilotic, and Bantu backgrounds have been thrust together with those of European and Indian origin to form the modern state, and how big-city earners and hunter-gatherers must somehow act as fellow citizens. It demonstrates some of the huge barriers that must be overcome if they are to succeed.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0655/8980/5233/files/1_faa77c32-bc13-4f9d-bb44-1ae4c3952d30.jpg?v=1762930565
most-affordable-vacation-destination
Most Affordable Vacation Destination

About this book

Welcome to Kenya. With her husband Terry she sets off for a holiday touring the game reserves, but what she finds far exceeds her expectations. In this her seventh travelogue, she takes readers from five star hotels to luxury tents in the wilderness, and to poverty in Nairobi's slums, describing a journey of joy, excitement, discovery, nostalgia, of new friendships and encounters of the very close kind with Kenya’s majestic wildlife. Forgotten memories come flooding back as she revisits the scenes of her childhood and adolescence, so movingly portrayed in her popular memoir I Wish I Could Say I Was Sorry, many of them changed beyond recognition. Written in her characteristic laid back style, this is a travel tale that will appeal to all those readers who have enjoyed Susie's previous books, as well as anybody who has lived in or dreams of visiting Kenya, the magical land Susie still thinks of as ‘home’. What makes this book more comprehensive is that the author was able to spend his third visit to Kenya as the only guest at Mara Napa Camps. He was fortunate to interview many of the staff. He then developed some interesting side-bar stories that are interconnected to the main theme of man's coexistence with nature and the animals who have inhabited these lands for centuries. Any earlier misconception the author might have had about the Maasai tribe is clearly rectified in his descriptions of their heritage, their history within their own country, and how they survived and are now thriving in these lands of the Mara. Should you ever get the opportunity to visit the Mara Napa Camps, go on safari to see the bountiful amount of animals in their natural habitat, and then be treated like royalty-both in the bar/lounge/dining room and in the exquisite, elegant tents with full service.
