For many years, the connections between a literary text and its film adaptation have been considered only from the point of view of the latter’s fidelity to the written work, which many scholars imagined to be the original that filmmakers needed to respect. Within the last two decades, however, the idea of adaptation fidelity has been challenged by a number of critics who refute the existence of an original text and promote the notion of an ambiguous and complex relationship between a literary work and its film adaptation. Based on such developments and with the help of queer theory, this book questions and revises several crucial theoretical approximations that analyze the relations between the two art forms in an attempt to overcome the limitations of fidelity discourse. This is the first book-length study that seeks to examine, with the appropriate detail, the connections between film and literature in Latin America through the lenses of queer theory and by focusing on the representations of numerous practices that do not fit within the general framework of heteronormative sexuality.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0655/8980/5233/files/1_1167051d-c9b4-4b97-9d94-afb92f50e94e.jpg?v=1763633431
do-better
Do Better: Critical Narratives of Disabled Graduate Students in Higher Education

Do Better illustrates the meaning of ableism through compelling narratives of graduate students in student affairs and higher education graduate preparation programs, who self-identify as disabled. At the heart of the project is the exchange of narratives – life stories that give insight into the cultural worlds of selves and others. Teaching to standards is not a new concept; teachers have adapted to new standards every few years for quite some time. And teachers are adaptable, as can be seen in this book. We are writing this book to demonstrate how teachers use research-based strategies to meet Common Core Standards while still focusing on students. Our goal is to help teachers visualize students in action as other teachers describe the implementation of research-based strategies in their own classrooms, show student work samples, and provide reflections of student success in achieving the standards. Many Common Core Standards books focus on the standards, but our approach focuses on strategies that engage the students in the classroom--showing how different teachers at varying grade levels have used the strategies to meet the standards. We believe that when used intentionally, and critically, media representations of Latinx communities and histories are powerful tools of and for high-quality curriculum and instruction. In line with previous iterations of the Hollywood or History? series, we believe inquiry-based lessons are well-suited to capitalizing on this potential. Still, we emphasize that inquiry be rooted in critical approaches and theoretical underpinnings that invite rich discussion on social justice over ephemeral nods to diversity, inclusion, and recognition. Latinos deserve complexity and nuance, truth and beauty. Hence, as we explain throughout the book, students and teachers must examine the historical accuracy of events and the ways (our) stories are told – how, why, where, and on what/whose terms Latinx are represented in film and television. Representation, like education itself, is a political project that is entrenched with systems of power and inequality. This general approach provides a path that, we hope, meets teachers where they are, providing avenues to better learn and refine knowledge of Latinx history for some, and to incorporate additional criticality and perspectives for others. We know most teachers are working hard (often in perilous situations) to include Latinx stories. As such, we hope that the lessons and ideas provide comfort and assurance as well as the opportunity to sit with and better teach the lasting impacts of many uncomfortable, yet often consequential histories. While it is well-established that Latinx histories are marginalized and over-simplified in social studies curricula, we aim to support teachers in breaking a vicious cycle of exclusion (or suspect inclusion) as Latinx histories are largely absent in textbooks and teachers are unsure to include new stories because the curriculum they learned didn’t have them. For those teachers who do feel confident centering Latinx media, this book is for you as well. While the adage don’t preach to the choir makes sense, it also bears mentioning that there are times when the choir needs rehearsal to gather, re-group, expand, and challenge the repertoire. In sum, we sought to create a book that would house a collection of stories that featured a variety of Latinx worlds, histories, and experiences. We hope that we not only provide pathways to increase the diversity of Latinx stories, but give tools for teachers and students to grapple with various projects of Latinx representation.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0655/8980/5233/files/1_9d7ca844-ab22-474f-99b7-27ac2e43c030.jpg?v=1763683364
the-education-of-minorities-in-africa-the-caribbean-and-the-middle-east
The Education of Minorities in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East

Educators have focused on creating and adapting curriculum content and pedagogy to reflect the diverse backgrounds of their minority students. In an age of rising populism and nationalism throughout the Western world, again questioned is the merit of multicultural education. In the shadows of Brexit and an America First agenda, where migration patterns across the world have led to demographic shifts, it is evident even in the richest countries in the world that gaps in opportunity (and subsequently achievement) still exist. Disparities in achievement lead some to question whether multicultural education works and others to revert to old notions that ethnically and linguistically marginalized students are in fact deficient. Extending upon previous research of high school dropouts, I examine how this one particular high school incorporated a self-paced curriculum with a focus on “family” to address the unique learning needs of students at risk of not graduating. By employing elements of grounded theory, narrative inquiry, and autoethnography, I share the stories of Walgut High School’s (a pseudonym) roughly sixty students as they struggle to navigate their respective roles in a dominant cultural narrative to which they’ve never felt like they belonged. Through the extensive and organic voices of the primary participants—as well as my observations of my own participation in the school culture over the course of a year—this project serves to offer insights not only into the school experiences of marginalized adolescents, but also into Walgut’s myriad successes and failures. In particular, this piece highlights the vitality of unconditionally caring or “hospitable” teachers (Derrida, 2000), while ultimately questioning the presumed utility of a high school diploma. The story concludes not by lauding the alternative mine created for Walgut’s canaries, but by questioning the purpose and stability of all scholastic minds.

As American schools continue making strides to accommodate and support the complex and oftentimes contradictory needs of their students, what it means to succeed as a teacher in (and prepare teachers for) these diversified, inclusive learning spaces is growing increasingly complicated. Indeed, given the shifting paradigm of American public education, teacher preparation programs must continue to adapt their practices and philosophies in order to equip their teacher candidates with the skills needed not only to thrive but also find purpose and meaning in schools similar to this project’s Walgut. While this book doesn’t claim to offer any answers to the myriad questions concerning the future of public schools, it does endeavor to offer a springboard from which all education stakeholders can continue engaging in healthy and productive discussions of how best to prepare students (and teachers) for autonomous, democratic, curious, creative, and compassionate citizenship both in and apart from their academic communities. To this end, rather than write from a detached, traditionally academic vantage, I have sought in these pages to compose from a personal (albeit limited), passionate (albeit subjective) and participatory (albeit someone marginalized) perspective. In my pursuit of social justice for the characters of Walgut High School, I begin first by exposing my own privileged role in perpetuating injustice. Only through recognizing and naming our own demons can we ever begin to exorcize the System writ large. Through the analysis of the author's various experiences - professional and initial training, support for change, organizational assessment, experiential learning, project management - this book explores questions about social or professional contexts and the subjective training of actors. One of the challenges is to understand and challenge phenomena such as the development of autonomy and subsidiarity in changing academic or academic contexts. The book promotes the emergence of an ethical and resilient subjectivity. It will show that storytelling is methodological resources for research-intervention paradigms, support the development of actors and stimulate mobility. In 2018, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that nearly half of undergraduate students were of non-white racial identities, with that number only increasing for future generations. This increase in diversity holds true for many other identity groups. Yet, faculty demographics remain disproportionately white and male. For years, students have called for institutions of postsecondary education to support their success through adopting more culturally relevant practices for teaching and learning. Scholarship on student success in college has also echoed this call. Developing Culturally Responsive Learning Environments in Postsecondary Education was developed to help postsecondary educators answer this call through a multilayered view of student support within the college classroom and beyond.

Specifically, this book features twenty-three chapters divided into four parts. Authors representing diverse backgrounds and institutional contexts come together to offer their own scholarly and practical expertise to tackle issues ranging from combating implicit bias and building cultural competence to exploring specific student experiences and practical ways to implement culturally responsive pedagogies.
