ThisAdvanced Reader of Modern Chinese Literaturepresents eight literary works by modern Chinese writers in the four major genres: non-fiction prose (literary essays), fiction, poetry, and drama.
Lesson texts are organized around the four literary types they fall under and each as a group begins with a critical introduction to the relevant genre characteristics and reading strategies. The works are drawn from the Republican era (1912-1949), the Mao era (1949-1976), and the post-Mao era (1977-present). In addition to the text itself, each lesson includes a set of preview questions, a separate list of vocabulary and grammar points both accompanied by example sentences for context, questions for class discussion, and post-lesson exercises. All lesson material is presented in the traditional and simplified characters. Adopting an integrative and holistic approach to reading authentic materials selected from across important periods in modern Chinese history, this volume aims to improve students' language skills on a discourse level while deepening their understanding of Chinese culture through authentic texts.
The book is intended for use by advanced students of modern Chinese, students of modern Chinese literature, and heritage learners who wish to maintain and sharpen their Chinese abilities.
