After the French Revolution, a choice had to be made between reaction and progressive development. Standing on the side of the Anciens were now the defenders of the Ancien Régime, who opposed the innovators and their innovations. The debate then spilled out into the literary field and became interdisciplinary, with consequences for historiography and the philosophical underpinnings of literary movements.
