Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Education: For Teachers' Training Classes and All Who Desire an Elementary Knowledge of the Subject

Ye Shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a Sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And thou Shall write them upon the door-posts of thine house and upon the gates. It would appear from this that the ability to read and write was compulsory. Besides the schools conducted by the par ents, there were the schools of the prophets, presided over by venerable and able men. These were for the study of medicine, poetry and law.
