The fascinating stories begin long before the area became synonymous with delivering renowned health care in partnership with innovative, world-class research and education. This book unveils the layers of stories that have shaped this area, and in parallel, the city's past, allowing the reader to witness the growth of Dallas from a unique perspective, spotlighting the critical role of the Southwestern Medical District.
Through six distinct chapters, readers will initially be transported back to the area's natural landscape and native populations. They will then learn about how early settlers, surveying, and land-use patterns shaped the land and early roads. This is followed by the influence of industrial activities, residential developments, and civic leaders such as Harry Hines, who had a pivotal role in developing Harry Hines Boulevard. Finally, the reader will learn of the many Dallas business and medical leaders whose efforts gave birth to and nurtured today's Southwestern Medical District, a district devoted to caring for the health and healing of our local population.
This book was commissioned by the Texas Trees Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to improving the health of people and cities through the transformative power of trees. The research and publication process was generously supported by the Summerlee Foundation, a mission-driven, proactive organization dedicated to the support of animal protection and the preservation of Texas history. This book has been a unique asset for one of Texas Trees's largest initiatives: the Southwestern Medical District Urban Streetscape and Park Project.
