Changkya Rölpai Dorjé (1717–86) was one of the most remarkable figures of Tibet in the eighteenth century, a figure of great political influence who also wrote masterpieces of Tibetan Buddhist literature in both poetry and prose. Educated beside the Qianlong emperor as a child, he was a Tibetan incarnate lama who spent little time in Tibet. He spoke Mongolian, Manchu, Mandarin Chinese, and Tibetan and served as a trusted advisor and preceptor to the emperor in Beijing, advocating on behalf of the Seventh and Eighth Dalai Lamas. He wrote many works, but he is duly famous for this masterful survey.

Donald Lopez is the Arthur E. Link Distinguished University Professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies at the University of Michigan. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000. His most recent translations, both with Thupten Jinpa, are Gendun Chöphel’s Grains of Gold: Tales of a Cosmopolitan Traveler and Ippolito Desideri’s refutation of rebirth and emptiness, Dispelling the Darkness: A Jesuit’s Quest for the Soul of Tibet.
