रूपा का जन्म, मेरठ नामक शहर में हुआ। उसके सपने बड़े थे, किन्तु उनको पूरा करने की राह अभी प्रत्यक्ष नहीं थी। लेडी इरविन कॉलेज में प्रवेश लेने के बाद, रूपा की टीचर डॉ० एस० आनन्दलक्ष्मी (जिन्हें प्यार से स्टूडेंट्स 'ऐना' कहा करते थे) का व्यापक प्रभाव रूपा की जीवन यात्रा व सोचने के ढंग पर पड़ने लगा।
