C'est a la suite des n fastes journ es de juin 1848, que troubl et navr , jusqu'au fond de l' me, par les orages ext rieurs, je m'effor ai de retrouver dans la solitude, sinon le calme, au moins la foi. Si je faisais profession d etre philo s0phe, je pourrais croire ou pr tendre que la foi aux id es entra ne le calme de l'e5prit en pr sence des faits d sastreux de l'histoire contem poraine: mais il n'en est point ainsi pour moi, et j'avoue humblement que la certitude d'un avenir providentiel ne saurait fermer l'acc s, dans une me d'artiste, a la douleur de traverser un pr sent obscurci et d chir par la guerre civile.
