Ernest Hemingway, perhaps best known for his stripped-down prose style, produced a large and impressive body of work that paralleled his larger-than-life personality. Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Cicero, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He lived a life of adventure and passion: he was a war correspondent for many years; he participated in extreme outdoor activities, such as the running of the bulls in Spain; and he married four times, moving to a different part of the world each time. He wrote some of the greatest novels of all time, including The Sun Also Rises (1926), A Farewell to Arms (1929), and The Old Man and the Sea (1951), for which he was awarded a Pultizer Prize. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. After battling many physical and mental ailments, Hemingway committed suicide in his home on July 2, 1961.
