With a post-reg version of Clinical Key Nursing in development and no other pharmacology offering for nurses at this level and of this scope, the content is even more important to update. Print sales of the current edition were quite robust (see above), topping 7,000 units, but it as much for the digital context that the content is now needed.

Due to the age of the content and the scale of change in the field, and the emphasis in the new NMC standards on readiness for prescribing, a thorough update is in order. The nature of the updating required rules out a rapid revision. The current edition authors are either deceased or retired so this 5thedition brings an all-new team of editors who will work with selected expert contributors to undertake the required updating while preserving the general approach of the outgoing team.

There is also an opportunity, with only minor tweaks of content, to position the new edition to better appeal to the wider market of pharmacists and allied health professionals - hence a proposed amendment to the title and inclusion of some allied health contributors. There is a major drive to increase the number of non-medical prescribers to address a current lack of prescribers. This book would appeal hugely to that group. However, the focus remains squarely on nurses and nursing students as the primary market.

4E is structured in 4 sections: (1) Medicines Management (2) General Principles (3) Clinical Pharmacology (4) Glossary, appendices etc. This structure is very functional and will be retained. In particular, part 3 mirrors the British National Formulary (BNF) used nationally by all pharmacists, prescribers and pharmacists. We will not change the structure of this section significantly as it lends itself well to nationally teaching curriculums for nurses and pharmacists. Sections 1 and 2, on the other hand, will need some more significant remodelling, and specifically according to the principles of content transformation:

Each subsection/chapter needs to operate as a complete section independently of another section to allow a modular approach to use.

Update to the content and broaden the appeal (see separate document for the detail)

The use of specialist contributors will make it easier, given the increase in complexity in this area, to produce fully up-to-date and authoritative chapters. However, one of the great strengths of the book overall is its simplifying and accessible approach and the editors will ensure this is retained.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0655/8980/5233/files/1_9f92952f-87c0-46b7-b9df-3f01c6d3b637.jpg?v=1762831703
https://www.indigo.ca/products/pharmacology-and-medicines-management-for-nurses-and-allied-healthcare-professionals
