Henry James was born in New York in 1843. He left Harvard Law School in 1863 to concentrate on writing and eventually settled in England. His literary output was prodigious and of the highest quality: more than 10 novels, novellas, short stories, essays, letters, and critical prose. Known by fellow novelists as 'the Master', James died in London, in 1916.

Colm Tóibín is a prize-winning Irish novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright, journalist, critic and poet.
