“What unbeatable fun!”—T. C. Boyle, author of World’s End

There’s a Monster in the Lake is like nothing I’ve ever read before—so sharp, so fast, so witty, so energetic. A simply gorgeous look at human credulousness but also at myth and the need to mythologize and the wonder of imagination. It’s a joy, a revelation, a spectacular entertainment.”—Edward Carey, author of Edith Holler

There’s a Monster in the Lake is an unbelievably great meditation on the malleable fabric of reality, the nature of legends, and the processes by which they are made. It’s written like Agatha Christie hired Joan Didion and Roland Barthes to crack the case of a cryptozoological caper. Full of strange reportage, heady theory, and sly humor, this monster hunt is a real (and fantastic) blast.”—Joshua Wheeler, author of The High Heaven
