From the author of The Last Dragon of the East comes a sweeping fantasy adventure with a dash of romance between a nine-tailed fox and the demon-hunter who captures her, banished to the underworld together and forced to form a reluctant alliance in order to escape the circles of Hell.
Yue may be the last of her kind. At night, she stalks the streets of the capital city of Longhao, luring in unsuspecting victims with the mask of a beautiful woman, then consuming them in her true form of the nine-tailed fox.
When she is captured by a powerful demon hunter named Sonam and banished to Hell, she manages one final act of revenge: dragging him—and two of his subordinates—down with her.
Now trapped in an abyss with unimaginable terrors, they’ll need each other’s help to navigate Hell and bypass the gods who preside over each circle, each of whom presents the group with a unique and deadly challenge. Forced to depend on one another as they claw their way out of the underworld, both demon and demon hunter discover that there might be more to the other than meets the eye.

An imaginative retelling of demons, love and lore
"The premise of this opposites attract fantasy sounds like it is going to be cliche, but this author had a beautiful way of rendering characters to make them morally grey and compelling and the plot took an unexpected turn. They really had reason to despise each other and the world building was creative and vividly drawn. Yue is a vicious nine tail fox demon that wears the mask of a beautiful woman and who eats humans. She comes with claws, a feline dark energy and excellent snark. That is all true, but she is also just trying to survive in a world that has betrayed and abandoned her. I loved her story and the character arc that is revealed as she forms long denied connections to other beings. On the opposite side of this equation we have Sonam the demon hunter. He is burdened by the weight of expectation for his station, and his need for vengeance. He too is tortured soul loosing himself to the hunt. Together, they play off the concept of who the monster really is and how all consuming hate can become. As they walk in the others shoes and listen to lost tales, tender threads of understanding and something more start to form. It was moving in a way I was not expecting. It is described as a dark adult fantasy and I think that is accurate for the complexities of the characters and their dynamics. They are scarred beings driven into monstrosity by the traumas of their past. There is a romance (no spice) that was equal parts sadness, longing, and sweetness, but it is certainly not the main focus. The setting was so beautifully rendered and the decent into hell integrated multiple legends into the story. Wen and Sooah offered the comical relief and alternative perspectives that this story needed. It was that tender sort of belonging in this band of damaged misfits that really found a place in my heart. I loved every moment of this book and the Asian lore was added in an imaginative way. I will be a lifelong fan of this author! If I was being really picky I would say that the ending was a little too neatly tied up and I was a confused by the magical abilities of the paintbrush to replicate not just being, but their abilities. I don’t want to give anything away so I will leave it there. I still liked the action packed ending, but that one part of the magical system was the only drawback in this otherwise wonderful novel. Thank you to ColoredPages Book Tour, Saga Press Books and Katrina Kwan for gifting this book as part of the book tour. It was a highly anticipated read for me and it certainly lived up to expectations."
