Author Spotlight

Behind the Scenes With Tessa Bailey

The bestselling romance author on writing, reading, and unusual habits.

What book feels like home to you?

Oooh, I would go with Lovelight Farms by B.K. Borison. Especially at this time of year.”

Which living author do you most admire?

“That would be a tie between Nora Roberts, who made me fall in love with romance trilogies, and Fredrik Backman, who is one the greatest storytellers around.”

What’s your most unusual writing habit?

“I have to write to the bottom of the page before I’m allowed to look at my phone, even if it’s dinging with texts. I also give myself a full week to ignore an email containing revisions from my editor.”

What’s the first thing you do after finishing a draft?

“Take a hot shower. Sometimes there’s crying involved.”

Describe your writing process in one word?

“Evolving.”

What is your favourite word to use in prose?

“Desperate.”

Where do you most like to write?

“On my couch.”

What moment in your life felt straight out of a novel?

“Packing up my clothes the day after high school graduation and driving cross-country to New York City, determined to have an adventure. And all the failures, false starts, and eventual triumphs that came after.”

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever researched for a story?

“I do a lot of research into the psychology of people who might possess various tastes in the bedroom.”

If your characters could critique you, what would they say?

“Get some sleep. You look terrible. Or they would tell me to stop using the word ‘stroke’ so much.”

If you could swap places with another author, who would that be?

Ruby Dixon. Blue aliens sound like a lot of fun.”

What emotion do you find hardest to write about?

“Guilt.”

Which book is your most treasured possession?

“A signed book of poetry from Seamus Heaney.”

Who are your favourite writers?

Kate Clayborn, B.K. Borison, Tana French, Abby Jimenez, Kennedy Ryan, and Fredrik Backman. To name a few.”

What’s the strangest thing in your workspace?

“Salt and pepper shakers shaped like turkeys. I like the look of them, so I repurposed them as decor.”

What book title best describes your life?

Unsteady by Peyton Corinne.”
