Foreword INDIES 2025 Book of the Year Finalist (Religion)
"A wide-ranging and cogent guide to seeing scripture in a new light. Disenchanted Christians will be energized."--Publishers Weekly How can we read the Bible in ways that lead to healing and wholeness?
As a pastor for more than ten years, Zach Lambert has seen the Bible used countless times as something far from the "Good Book"--both in his own life and in the experiences of others. He has seen the Bible weaponized to subjugate women, justify racism, bash LGBTQ+ people, cover up abuse, and exclude people who speak out against these injustices.
If you've been hurt by harmful interpretations or feel disconnected from Scripture, this book offers a path forward to reclaim the Bible's life-giving message. This accessible resource will help you
● break free from harmful interpretations that distort Scripture's true message, ● develop Christ-centered reading practices, ● renew your relationship with Scripture, ● apply new frameworks to challenging Bible passages that have historically been misused to cause harm, and ● connect with Christians who embrace Scripture's call to abundant life for everyone.
In this compassionate guide, Lambert dismantles four common lenses for reading the Bible that lead to harm, then offers four new lenses that promote healing and wholeness. This book welcomes all Christians--regardless of background, doubts, or wounds--to reengage Scripture in life-giving ways.

Better Ways to Read the Bible: Transforming a Weapon of Harm into a Tool of Healing
"I've been anticipating Zach Lambert's Better Ways to Read the Bible for a while, and it honestly exceeded my expectations. Lambert offers a compassionate and practical framework for re-engaging with scripture, transforming it from a weapon of exclusion into a tool for healing and love. Through real-life stories, thoughtful historical context, and accessible explanations, he guides readers toward a more nuanced, ethical interpretation of the Bible. I felt a lot of hope and clarity as I read, especially in the sections on reframing difficult passages. This is a must-read for anyone who has been hurt by religion or seeks a more inclusive, loving way to read the Bible."

Healing for those hurt by the church
"If I had to pick two words to sum up Zach Lambert's new book Better Ways to Read the Bible they would be hope and healing. In this book, Zach takes four commonly used interpretive lenses in the Evangelical church: literalism, apocalypse, moralism, and hierarchy and uses a variety of resources to highlight the harm these lenses have caused over the past number of decades. He then contrasts them with four healthier options: Jesus, context, flourishing, and fruitfulness. I found myself instantly drawn in by Zach's easy storytelling approach to writing as he effortlessly weaves personal experiences with scriptural evidence and peer reviewed references. Though the topic is a bit more academic in nature, this combination of writing elements makes the book accessible and enjoyable and I often caught myself responding out loud to different points (which is a bit more of an issue when the kids are asleep and it's midnight, grin). However, my biggest takeaway, by far, was the sheer amount of hope I felt reading this book as someone who has lived through church trauma, deconstruction, and is trying to rebuild faith in a chaotic world. The graciousness with which Zach platforms other scholars is evident in every chapter. The commitment of inclusion and it's grounding in scripture is one of the best I've read in recent years. Best of all, for me, I now have a resource for the others in my circles who have been hurt by the church and need a safe place to start exploring faith again."
