"I’m a huge fan of Oliver Jeffers’ work across the board! But this ghost story has a particularly artistic feel. Transparent pages and use of multiple techniques (photos and paintings) make reading this book an art-filled experience that inspires creativity!"

Behind the Scenes With Melanie Watt

What’s your most unusual writing habit?

When I write a story idea, I also draw. My ideas appear as visuals in my mind. Being an author and illustrator allows me to create by drawing what I don’t write and writing what I don’t draw.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever researched for a story?

For my latest book 10 shocking things about Capybaras, I got to research some surprising facts about these rodents and their odd digestion habits. Read the book and find out what I’m taking about!

If your characters could critique you, what would they say?

The Capybara would probably argue that I shouldn’t have shared the not-so-flattering facts about capybaras. Scaredy Squirrel might tell me that I should be more organised (I’m sort of messy at home). Chester would surely be claiming that he is the brains behind every book I created! The Bunny would insist that I don’t give him enough attention.

Which character from your books would you most likely befriend?

I think I could befriend them all because I can relate to every personality trait of my characters. Whether it be Augustine’s artistic side, Leon the chameleon’s shyness, Scaredy’s fear of the unknown, Chester’s quest for control, Al Foxward’s salesman tactics, The Bunny’s need for validation, Bug in a vacuum’s whirlwind of emotions, or Capybara’s want to be accepted.

What’s one thing every great bedtime story needs?

In my view, I’d say a message of hope, some laughs, illustrations that captivate and an overall topic that can set in motion new discussions between parents/adults and kids.
