Reviews

Beautiful story set it Newfoundland of the 1990s.

"If you want a faced paced, nostalgic walk through 1990s rural Newfoundland, this is the book. Part murder mystery, part tear jerker. I hope Perry Chafe has a few more novels in him yet."

Closer by Sea

"I was excited to read this. . . love the cover, enjoyed much of the description - based on Fogo Island and it definitely rang true. I was intrigued by the plot and it was very readable and I certainly wanted to keep going and even had a few tears at the end. However, there was quite a bit that did not ring true for me: 12 y/o kids breaking into someone's home when they thought that 'someone' was a murderer? stealing a boat and sailing to a deserted island? a 12 y/o being so captivated by a girl he met once? It was an interesting story but not awesome writing."

"A youth book which gives a look at life in Newfoundland 60+ years ago. Mr. Chafe had an interesting idea for a story but the execution of it is barely average."

A recommended read

"This book was recommended to me. I didn’t think I would enjoy it just by the book description but gave it a chance based on recommendation. I ended up really liking it and suggest others give it a try!"

Megan (4/5)

Wonderful Newfoundland tale of childhood friends.

"A warm, coming of age story where you feel for the young characters."

Robin (5/5)

Great Canadian Read

"I absolutely loved this book. It was a delightful find. It follows a group of friends aged 12, the perfect age for discovery and change. Just as the characters are changing, Newfoundland, the setting, is also on the cusp of a generational upheaval, the cod moratorium. When a local girl goes missing, the friends decide to solve the mystery. The novel is perfectly paced and beautifully written."
