A Hilarious Original!

"This book was so fun, so funny, and so unique. The little nitpicks I have don't matter - I had a blast reading it, and I recommend it easily."

Hilariously Dark Humour!

"I picked this up on a whim, and the cover caught my eye. I. Flipping. Loved. This! It’s unhinged, hilarious, gory, cute, and a little romance to boot. If Supernatural, Dungeon Crawler Carl and The Office had a love child, this might be it! If you don’t enjoy that kind of blunt and somewhat dark humour then maybe don’t. But if you’re an overworked corporate office worker, who’d appreciate the opportunity to shove that coworker into another dimension full of monsters - you’ll probably have a grand time!"

Xemlo (5/5)

A fun reads

"I really enjoyed this one. It was a good, fun read with lots of laughs and an entertaining story. Easy to get into."

What would you do for a mid-management position?

"Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the Advanced Reader’s Copy of Colin Gets Promoted and Dooms the World by Mark Waddell. This book is to be published on October 7, 2025. Colin works for Dark Enterprises. Colin might be a psychopath. He just might be ambitious. But to what lengths would you go for a middle-management position? Tired of being bullied in Human Resources, he makes an elevator deal with a sketchy figure, gets promoted and subsequently dooms the world. Not the whole world. Just New York. Colin’s actions render quite the adverse reactions. Uncontrollable chaos! It’s hard to classify this into one genre. Is it horror, satire, romance, science fiction, humour, LGBTQIAP+? It’s a mix of all that. Really, it was just so much fun to read. The humour is on fire throughout. One of the best endings ever written. It had me laughing out loud."

Praise for Colin Gets Promoted and Dooms the World

"The humor throughout this novel is delightfully witty in a way that fans of dry satire will greatly enjoy. Filled with top-notch worldbuilding, entertaining antagonists, and tongue-in-cheek charm . . . this novel is not to be missed for fans of urban fantasy that gently toes the horror line. A charming corporate horror novel with a whole lot of heart."
Kirkus (starred review)

“Fun. . . . Waddell’s novel carefully balances humor and horror with broken dreams and gray morality. . . . Most readers won’t have experienced as much workplace death, dismemberment, or eldritch horror as Colin, but this underdog revenge fantasy is for anyone who has been bullied, ignored, or taken advantage of.”
Library Journal

“This book is anything but another day at the office. Charmingly twisted and twistedly charming, Colin Gets Promoted and Dooms the World is as timely and poignant as it is witty and imaginative."
Maxie Dara, author of A Grim Reaper's Guide to Catching a Killer

“Sure, the problem of evil is a complex, multi-faceted, devastating, and challenging subject; but what about evil that is hilarious?. . . . The consequences of Colin's ambitions may be dire, and every joke is delivered at knifepoint, but that doesn't make you laugh any less. If you want your moral centre to be gleefully eroded by indefensible characters, selfish love, and literally cutthroat office politics, this is the vice for you.”
—Natalie Zina Walschots, author of Hench

“Mark Waddell’s Colin Gets Promoted and Dooms the World is . . . full of office politics, and high stakes. . . . Fans of office comedies will love this snarky and satirical story.”
—She Does the City

“Waddell delivers the perfect balance of humor, chaos, and horror into a terrific page-turning narrative.”
—Criminal Element

"With plenty of jokes about shady executives, corporate drudgery, and ritual sacrifice, Waddell has created a romp that will have readers wondering how Colin will get himself and the world out of the mess he's created...hilarious contemporary fantasy."
—Shelf Awareness

“The blend of corporate satire with eldritch horror made for a sharp, entertaining fusion that felt both absurd and uncomfortably fitting.”
—Game Vortex

"Waddell's writing is sharp, with strong pacing and a good line-by-line balance of horror and comedy."
Library Journal (starred review)

“Amusing and gruesome, Mark Waddell’s mile-a-minute plot keeps the pages turning in this novel of a mild-mannered nobody looking for a path to genuine power. . . . Delightfully macabre and funnily zany.”
—BC BookLook
MARK WADDELL grew up on the cold, windswept prairies of western Canada and later earned a Ph.D. in the history of science, medicine, and technology from the Johns Hopkins University. After teaching at Michigan State University for fifteen years, he and his husband moved to Vancouver Island. When not writing, he plays the viola in the Civic Orchestra of Victoria, walks his dogs on the beach, and slays fearsome monsters in Dungeons & Dragons.
