A Book for Lovers of the Widerness

"A good read about wilderness camping and bear characteristics and habitat. The author at the same time deals with personal issues such as grief and illness. The story is written is a very lucid and straightforward style."

Favourite Book

"This is one of the best books that I have read for years. The author captures the experience of leaving the city and going into the woods. It is poetic but also very readable. There are many life lessons woven into the sotry, but they are subtle. I bought copies of this book for my sister and daughter and have recommended it to many others. If you enjoy the outdoors, and particularly Algonquin Park, this is a book that you must read."

.

"This is a book both inspiring and frightening. As one who enjoys the backcountry of our province of Ontario, I am well aware of the """"threat"""" that bears present, and so the view from the bear's perspective was fascinating. And of course it is scary to think of having a confrontation with such a beast. Read it to see why this magnificent creature does what he does, and respect him for it."

Excellent livre!

"Ce livre m'a appris énormément sur l'ours noir et ses comportements. Les informations sont fondées et recherchées. La lecture est facile puisqu'elle est contée comme une histoire. Je ne me méfiais pas trop des ours noirs, mais maintenant je vais m'assurer d'avoir un répulsif à ours (bear spray)."

A really great read

"A gripping story that you can't put down. A very talented writer!"

Accurate.

"The book is well written from a literary perspective. Cameron's choice of point-of-view shifts and detailed imaging of bears' rationale is interesting and quite possibly accurate. This reader finds it somewhat tainted by the subtle anthromopomorphizing of bears' thought processes behind their actions. That doesn't interfere too much with the enjoyment of a decent read."

How to Survive a Bear Attack

"A fascinating perspective of how wildlife attempts to survive in a world where it sees its habitat disappearing, while contrasting this with a woman's post-cancer diagnosis and treatment and her efforts to survive and live."

Tugs at your heart strings

"Absolutely beautifully written novel. The author brings you into her world and the wonders of nature. Definitely a must read !"

Fascinating book

"This was a very well written memoir, with the right balance of personal experience, education about nature and bears, and further thought into how humans and nature interact, and how you feel grief. The book had a nonlinear narrative but it fit, I couldn’t stop myself from reading I just wanted to know what came next. I found the parts about her cancer to be raw and touching, but inspirational in how she used nature to work through her grief and fear and now doesn’t fear the sun, but uses nature to heal. She took us on the journey of survival and self exploration, and I couldn’t have been happier. Her change in perspective on bears/bear attacks and her desire to understand bears was amazing to witness to be a part of and I found it very educational and I very much enjoyed it. Her writing was like a stream of water, it just flowed so well, and her word choice was so beautiful."

“At once a memoir, a meticulously researched investigation, and a meditation on the force of nature, Claire Cameron weaves the narrative together seamlessly in a tale of courage, determination, and, above all else, love. A remarkable achievement that teaches us not only how to survive, but how to thrive, even when the odds are stacked against you.” —David A. Robertson, author of The Theory of Crows and Black Water

“Deeply researched and profoundly moving, Claire Cameron’s wonderful book is, at root, a braided love story, by turns heartbreaking and terrifying, but above all brimming with a fierce affection—for her family, for her subjects, and for the precious, precarious act of staying alive. I could not put it down.” —John Vaillant, author of Fire Weather and The Tiger

“True wilderness has no narrative. It is immediate, and visceral, beyond words at the time, and often beyond description later. So, it speaks to Claire Cameron’s courage and skill as a writer that she has triumphantly wrested such a compelling and profound story out of her journey, both into the wild heart of bear country, and into the terror-filled landscape of a devastating cancer diagnosis. How to Survive a Bear Attack is a transcendent, powerfully moving, brilliant literary achievement.” —Helen Humphreys, author of Followed by the Lark

“Stunning . . . offers nature writing at its finest. At its heart, How to Survive a Bear Attack is an unforgettable story about finding the courage to face even the wildest of natures within and around us all.”Winnipeg Free Press

“In a masterful fusion of forensic journalism, nature reporting and memoir, Claire Cameron’s account of a deadly incident explores mortality and the consciousness of the wild. How to Survive a Bear Attack paddles readers through Algonquin Park rivers and into the halls of medicine, asking them to be brave and inquisitive in order to survive the unexpected.” —Governor General’s Literary Award peer assessment committee (Kevin Chong, Norma Dunning and Adrienne Gruber)
