Action Packed & Thrilling

"This book was really cool. Not only did I find the story different to what I usually read with it being science fiction with artificial intelligence, this book was laid out in an incredibly unique format. If you want an action packed story, this is one to pick up. The story was high adrenaline and intense throughout the whole thing. It definitely was a book that I found hard to put down because I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next. When it came to the Phobos virus, I have a different perspective of it after going through a pandemic. I don't know if I necessarily would have thought the same prior to 2020. I definitely will continue the rest of the series because this was such a fun and thrilling read."

Not a bad book, just not for me

"I wanted to like this. And now that I know the next book doesn’t follow Grant and Ezra I’m inclined to keep going but damn this style just did not work for me. It really picked up after 50% but I still am not loving the style. It’s very creative and maybe I can pick the series back up in the future but right now I need classic writing. One of the biggest drawbacks for me was the tone used for writing the two main characters. I’m so over teen YA sarcastic characters and I know we had a whole trend so they are kind of everywhere but I don’t care for the jokes. Also, really annoyed by the swear words all being blacked out. I was super pumped when I first paged through the novel thinking it would be some sort of puzzle for the reader to solve kind of like an escape room novel - it was not. It is literally just keeping this book PG while simultaneously giving me an aneurism trying to read it. I’m usually a fan of Aime Kaufman’s work so I’m inclined to see it through. I would still recommend it if you’re open to sci-fi and a whole different style of writing."

Unique book!

"I had very high expectations going into this book since every booktuber was talking about this story when it came out. It did not disappoint. The unique format combined to this crazy story filled with action and twists blew me away. Artificial intelligence fascinates me and even though its complexity and essence might not have been presented perfectly in this story, it was still a great introduction."

A very enjoyable and unique sci-fi read!

"Considering my history with disliking fantasy or extreme sci-fi novels, I did not expect to like this book. Besides the genre, the format of this book is also not something I am normally used to, nor is the length. However, the hype sucked me in. Despite all of these concerns, I actually adored Illuminae! To start off, I really liked the characters, specifically the main heroine Kady. Kady was an incredibly brave, selfless, and strong girl. I honestly don't know how she managed to survive through all of the obstacles she was faced with- it was crazy to see her bounce back and recover from them every single time! Ezra was also a pretty cool guy, though I found him to be a tad unmemorable. I do hope to see his character develop more when I pick up Gemina, though, because he is definitely still deserving of it. Oh, and also, I loved the way he and Kady were always there for each other- they have become one of my most major ships! <3 AIDAN, the artificial intelligence, was simply hilarious to read about! He often had these really kooky revelations and opinions that had me chuckling throughout the novel, and I am super excited for more of him! Illuminae is one of the most event-filled, action-packed novels I have ever picked up. Not only is it extremely plot-driven, but it is also super fast and nothing left me bored at all, and books of this type often have the potential to put me to sleep. All in all, if you are looking for a futuristic story set in space that is packed with punch, then Illuminae is your dream book. Both the characters and the plot were absolutely astonishing. However, although the story was entertaining, it was a little long and strenuous to read at times due to the format (it was cool though!), so for this reason, I will be deducting one star. Anyway, I can't wait to see what happens in Gemina, and I have my fingers crossed that it will be just as awesome- or even more so- than this one was!"

Amazing!

"This was such a unique book. It took me a while to start reading it because I was like ""huh, this is weird. "" but when I did I FLEW through it. I had an extremely hard time putting it down. AND the twists! I never ever see any twists coming and when they came I went through every single emotion. Glad I had the second and third in the series ready to go when I was done this one!"

"This book was AMAZING. I've never read anything like it and it changed my world. I loved the mixed-media format and it managed to make me feel what the characters felt even though we had no true descriptive paragraphs.
