Kate Quinn’s Bookish Booklist

Plus, the bestselling author shares her No. 1 writing habit, strangest research topic, and more.

“In the ruins of post-WWII London, a book with an inscription from Guernsey Island comes into the hands of burnt-out journalist Juliet Ashton. What follows is a correspondence that leads her to an island book club whose love of reading kept their spirits alive during the German occupation. My favourite epistolary novel in the world.”

“A thrice-widowed countess draws her neighbours together for a secret book club that inspires them to rewrite their own stories. Madeline writes the absolute best books-about-books!”

“A mesmerizing horror/fantasy about a hidden race of vampire-like people who eat books instead of blood and retain everything they eat: munch a romance novel for a sweet treat, snack on a map, and never get lost. I ate this up in one sitting.”

“Bookseller Cassie stumbles upon a mysterious book that can open a door to anywhere in the world ... but soon realizes there are more magic books out there which can do wondrous and terrible things, and someone is trying to collect them all. I desperately wanted my own book of doors by the end of this enchanting tale, dangerous or not!”

“A Chinese university flees Nanking ahead of the Japanese invasion, and on their backs the students carry a priceless treasure: a 500-year-old collection of myths and folklore. A journey of a thousand miles marked by horrors and wonders alike, highlighting the importance of legends even in (especially in) the midst of violence.”

“A major league baseball player finds his marriage in major league trouble. Desperate not to lose his wife, he's dubious at first when his friends hand him a stack of romance novels and tell him to start studying up. Watching a group of alpha males seriously debate Grand Gestures (timing is everything) and Romantic Declarations (must be sincere, not flowery) as the secret to real life happy endings is utterly charming.”

Behind the Scenes With Kate Quinn

What’s your most unusual writing habit?

“I change my perfume with every book I write, so I have a thematic scent associated with the story I’m telling. For The Astral Library, it was a perfume called ‘Library Ghost’—because there are library ghosts in the book!”

Where do you most like to write?

“My gorgeous study with serene pale blue walls and yellow roses in vases and a coffee mug-warmer parked strategically next to every chair. I felt so lucky the moment I could finally do myself up a real home office to write in—everything in it is designed to be peaceful and inspirational.”

Which book is your most treasured possession?

“A green leather-bound first edition of Yeats my husband gave me—I love Yeats, and I love old books with gilt edges and embossed covers and that fabulous sewn-in ribbon bookmark (all books should have this!).”

If your characters could critique you, what would they say?

“My characters are much bolder and more intrepid than me. They would probably tell me it's time to get out of the study and go on a real adventure for a change!”

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever researched for a story?

“Trying to figure out if a creek in Washington, D.C., was deep enough to sink a body in (this was for The Diamond Eye) and knowing that every permutation of that online search was probably landing me on an FBI list somewhere.”
