Bride was way better

"A couple girls and myself from #PatiosandPagesYYC decided to do a group read of Mate after reading Bride for Bookclub in January and quite enjoying it. I should have stopped after Bride TBH. Mate did nothing for me and I found it to be so slow and boring. I really didn’t care about the characters and it was a completely different vibe and I wasn’t vibing. That’s about it. I don’t even know if I’d recommend it to people who enjoyed Bride. Maybe if they didn’t like Bride I’d tell them to read Mate ahah."

Loved it!

"I absolutely devoured Mate—one sitting and I was done. While I still prefer Bride, this follow-up was undeniably fun in its own right. Ali Hazelwood’s pacing just fits my reading style perfectly; her stories move with an effortless energy that keeps me hooked from page one. I haven’t read much omegaverse, but I really appreciated the twist here: the fact that she doesn’t instantly know who her mate is. It gives the story a refreshing sense of ease and “normalcy,” rather than the usual dramatic, fated-moment reveal. It made the dynamic feel lighter and more grounded. Overall, Mate was a fast, enjoyable read—and one I can definitely see myself returning to for a re-read."

Predictable but fun!

"This was a 3. 5 stars read for me! Mate is the sequel to Bride and I must admit I rather disliked the latter. I almost didn't pick up Mate but I am glad I did! This is Serena and Koen's story, and as per the title, they are obviously mate. However their story isn't an easy one and it unfurls amidst health issues, kidnapping attempts, heavy secrets and of course an alpha male who puts up a heck of an emotional wall. On paper their romance is impossible but as Serena learns what it means to be a human-were hybrid some obstacles are overcome but additional barriers are erected. I truly enjoyed their banter, the yearning, the comradery and found family with Koen's pack and the actual storyline and its pacing. I gave it a 3. 5 stars as I figured out every single plot point very early on and am simply not planning on reading it again. It was still a fun read but it will not make the onto my bookshelf."

Fantastic

"4 only because I thought that plot was a little stupid. It pissed me off that of course men got a woman's diagnosis wrong (rude) and tbh I didn't really care for the rest of the background plot. BUT. THE. ROMANCE. I fucking ATE THAT SHIT UP!!!!!!! Holy crap!!! The slow burn/pining, I'm salivating. I LOVED THAT SHIT. Koen. Need I say more?"

BEST Ali Hazelwood book! Maybe even. . best book period!

"I instantly fell in love, I mean I read this in one day! The characters, the setting, plot, everything 100/10! If you love a sarcastic/witty duo, scruffy guy who’s protective, girl who’s afraid to make people worried. There is maybe 3 chapters of smut but you have to go through the 20 other chapters to get to it, so a little on the slow burn side. If you wish Jacob from twilight was more primal, hot and dominant, you’ve found your home."

Better Than Bride

"3. 5 stars First off, I feel like I have to acknowledge a bias that I had going into this book. I don't know if I've ever really 'loved' any shifter/werewolf romance. Even for ""Twilight"", I think Team Jacob was at a disadvantage with me from the start. But with that being said, I have liked Ali Hazelwood's writing, romance, relationships, and characters in previous novels enough to want to read this book. Okay, maybe ""Bride"" and I didn't have the best outcome but I still wanted to read this one. And to be honest, I did like this book more than I remember liking ""Bride"". There was still that THING that is kind of awkward (if you know you know. . . or maybe knot. . . ) but it wasn't until later on and I didn't feel like it was as focused on in this novel. I really enjoyed the characters and their relationship. That was my favourite part of the story. Admittedly, I wasn't really interested in the main political storyline but I could see how it could be interesting for people who wanted more substance in this novel aside from the romance. It was an entertaining enough read and it still has me believing that I want to pick up every book Ali Hazelwood writes even if it might not be a genre (or sub-genre)that I would typically pick up."

Mate Eventually

"Good story, typical of Ali Hazelwood. This is the second in the series of vampires and werewolves and was fun. The wise cracking and repartee was scintillating. The story line was a bit unbelievable, with the weird clause written into the werewolf’s leadership role but if one looks past that ,,it was good."

I Could Knot Get Enough

"I love this book. This is definitely the most sexually explicit book by AH. Lots of her other novels have shorter less detailed descriptions. The sexual tension was chef’s kiss. I want a man written by Ali Hazelwood. I hated the celibacy thing for Koen. I’m sorry but in the cases of a mate… ain’t no way that is working. I understand this was the major point for the story, keeping him and Serena apart for the plot, but still. I also called it! I knew it was gonna be Heat and not some Were syndrome. I loved that there was a point to call out the male physicians."
