A Worthy Read

"Wonderful for anyone looking for an introduction to stoic philosophy"

Torin (5/5)

Roman philosophy

"There’s a reason this is one of the “must read” in a lifetime. I have a copy and I’ve gifted many since the pearls of wisdoms are relevant across generations. Easy to read & understand."

Ronica M. (5/5)

Every thing is fine at and in the right place.

"It is a bit hard to read with the newbie, but the words are deep and fulfill."

Gabrian (4/5)

Wisdom and Consolation in Times of Loss

"I bought Meditations to console a friend after the loss of his partner, never imagining that I would face my own loss only days later. In these pages, Marcus Aurelius’ voice cuts through time with clarity, reminding us of the strength found in acceptance, resilience, and perspective. Stoicism here is not cold detachment, but a profound wisdom that steadies the heart when grief feels unbearable. A timeless companion for those seeking both comfort and strength."

Francesco (5/5)

A guide to any human thought

"This book gave me knowledge not only of what life was like in the Roman empire then, but life itself now. It has incredible detail to provide the deepest of human nature and its thoughts."

Victoria K. (5/5)

The Title says it all!!!!

"A classic in a pocket form with an insightful introduction. Many have heard of the journals of the last of the five good Emperors and his stoic view on life, however if you can see past the depictions of the big screen, set aside your preconceptions concerning the age in witch it was written, you will find a collection of deeply thoughtful and insightful lesions on dealing with adversity, focusing your grip on what is important and seeing the world as it is not as we wish it to be. . ."

Raymond (4/5)

Worthy

"My favourite is the version translated by Gregory Hays. Robin Waterfield's is good for the footnotes and his way of translating, but the formatting isn't my favourite. This one is great. Travel size. Great cover and design. Solid intro notes. This is probably my second favourite version I have read (about five or six versions in)"

Jay M. (4/5)

Solid dependable Philosophy

"I’ve been using the philosophy of Marcus Aurelius writing for years. Seemingly designed to help you live well and be a good person"

Aaron (5/5)

Top Shelf!

"This is my favourite book that I’ve ever read. Based around the practice of the stoic philosophy, Marcus Aurelius has written 12 books (journals) of exhortations, advice and reflections addressing himself from the 2nd century. This book is beyond fascinating and would be a great fit for anyone looking to get familiar with the stoic philosophy and expand their perspective. There’s a reason so many people that have accomplished great things have referenced this book. The Notes at the end of the translated text are also a nice addition; they provide even more perspective on Marcus’s writings, while maintaining the authenticity of his original text."

Spenny (5/5)

Great version

"Laid out in a way that’s comfortable to read. Love the foreword(s)."

[Poochigian] has done a wonderful job in working as a conduit for the original ideas and tone of Marcus’s Aurelius’s accidental great work. In Poochigian’s hands Meditations is what it was always meant to be: personal and profound, inquisitive and demanding, grounded and transcendent all at once. Poochigian handles the nuances of both time and language very well. He has returned reading Meditations to the sensation of moving into a new home and finding the journal of the previous owner buried in the far corner of the attic....Aaron Poochigian is the latest to offer you the diary of the man I have come to call 'The Mentor Emperor' and he has created one of Meditations’ most meaningful and profound renditions. —Jason Mott, Book Post

[An] excellent new translation.... Poochigian notes that, along with being a philosopher, Marcus Aurelius was also a literary artist, a point he underscores.—Joseph Epstein, Washington Free Beacon

Today, maybe more than ever, we need Marcus Aurelius . . . Poochigian translates Marcus’ Greek into fluent, colloquial English, at times making the emperor sound like your favorite college professor, at times your therapist . . . This work has been pushing people to live well for two millennia. Now, all we must do is read it again. This new translation makes Marcus’ advice hit home in an English of unaffected dignity. A classic work of philosophical advice, rendered into our vivid modern vernacular.—Kirkus Reviews
Aaron Poochigian has published four books of poetry and several translations, including Aristophanes: Four Plays (2021) and Stung with Love: Poems and Fragments by Sappho (2009). He lives in New York City.
