Cute meet-cute & premise but poor execution

"This was my first book by Anabel Monaghan and it was light, summery and simple but it didn't check all the boxes for what I expect in a romance. It started off with a cute (if wet) meet cute and I thought ""I'm gonna love this book!"" as I hunkered down on my flight. And sure, the story touches on emotional topics: grief, new relationships after a break-up, self-discovery and juggling all that life throws at newly divorced moms, but it didn't explore any of these issues with nearly enough depth. There's no tension, no drama! It felt repetitive and awkward - especially with so much time spent listening to Ali talk to her dead mom. The main characters were . . . fine at best with the stand-out being Phyllis, Ali's elderly neighbour who was a very tertiary character. (Petty moment: Ali's son Cliffy's name made me cringe every time I saw it on the page). I appreciated that this book centres around a middle-aged woman finding herself, but the third act break-up wasn't needed, the story was boringly predictable and while it had a decent premise, it lacked depth and won't be a story or couple that will stick with me long. I'm in the vast minority on this one. There are a lot of rave reviews, but I just don't get it."

Very Sweet!

"I really loved Ethan and Ali! Such a sweet story, and I loved watching Ali come out of her shell. Definitely a great feel good book!"

Heartfelt and funny

"It’s hard to describe the delight I had listening to Summer Romance by Annabel Monaghan. This book had sweet filled moments, the MMC Ethan was the perfect book boyfriend and support system to Ali during her divorce and was perfect with the romance. Also, the secondary characters were just as charming as the main characters."

Fun summer read!

"I loved this book. I loved the theme of how important it is for parents (especially mothers) to fill their own cup too to benefit their kids. The setting was great for a summer read."

A summer must read!

"This book has a traditional trope done in a slightly unconventional way. The characters are relatable and lovable, and the story is more about self discovery than it is about Prince charming. It definitely ends on a happier note as most of these books do but the journey there is a little different and is so enjoyable. The spice level is really low, but you don’t need it because the story is so good ."

Summer Romance

Well written romantic novel

"SUMMER ROMANCE is an outstanding example of the best of contemporary romance books. It's a good introduction to the genre for people who think their taste is too literary to pick up a romance. With humour and a light touch, Monaghan blends the main character's grief and emerging self-image with the fun and games of summer in a small town. The male main character is sweet and you will not want her to let him go! Her interiority is sensitively portrayed, especially with her realizations about her relationship with her late mother. The children are also portrayed well, cute without stereotypes. I really recommend this delightful novel!"

Linda (5/5)

Obsessed

"I will honestly read anything Annabel puts out. She has a way of making you feel nostalgia for her characters. I love the lighthearted vibe of each of her books mixed with some real life themes. Another masterpiece!!!"

Victoria (5/5)

Loved it!!

"Loved the story line and how they are older with more responsibilities. Great book to finish off the summer"

Ariane (5/5)

Imperfect romance

"Looking for a beach read? This novel is hung on the scaffold of a romance but touches into some deeper themes so it packs a bit more punch. It still delights with a frisson of desire and characters that feel relatable."
