“Recitatif tracks a friendship that begins when the main characters, Twyla and Roberta, meet in a shelter where they have been left by their respective mothers. One of them is Black and one is white. Intentionally, Morrison doesn’t tell the reader which is which. Instead, she gently nudges us, leaving “clues” in the way each of them processes and remembers events. At its heart, this deeply compelling story provokes us, the readers, to better understand how those without power experience life.
Morrison writes with poetic elegance and deep intention. It is nothing short of a treat to be in the hands of this literary giant.”
