Reviews

A nice easy read

"Picked up this book after hearing a lot about it online. It was cute and uplifting while dealing with a lot of themes of grief and loss but I sort of felt like it has been over-hyped."

Euphoria 101

"A lovely story in a world of confusion. The relationships in the story are true and genuine and it makes you want more of these feelings when it ends."

Donna (5/5)

Remarkably Bright Creatures

"Very interesting book. Not at all what I thought it was going to be ."

Gord (5/5)

Good but no connection

"The story and plot was good and while semi predictable once you learned the background it was good read. However it was just that. I was never on the edge of my seat I never struggled to put it down and I didn't care for the characters. I didn't feel connected to them or the story at all. Honestly I disliked some of the characters more than I liked them which made it difficult to even read the chapters focused around their life. Also it's hard to wrap your head around an octopus narrating with thoughts - I'd have to do research I know they're smart creatures but come on they can't be that smart. So that also bugged me. But I think there was a lot of potential in the story and I'm not mad at the writing style etc, I just feel I lacked a connection"

Michelle (2/5)

A new love for Marcellus the Octopus 🐙

"I was on the fence about reading this book. Its not my usual genre that I would normally read. Am i ever glad that i did! I was obsessed with this book and marcellus the octopus. The only down side is that I read it to fast."

KKDD (5/5)

A Book to put a Smile on your face!

"A lovely story for such a troubling world!!! This one will think there is hope for mankind. And you will definitely have a new perspective about octopus! What amazing creatures they are!!! Such a warm adventure!!!"

Debbie (5/5)

A remarkably smart read

"Initially, the reader sees the world from the viewpoint of Marcellus, a captive west coast octopus, wise beyond his short life span of four years. Readers have to step outside their own comfort level and accept that Marcellus, a fascinating character in his own right, has the ability to think and, yes, understand the dilemmas of humans around him. Once you accept this premise the characters develop beautifully and believably as they contend with all the chaos life throws at them. The plot is believable and in many places quite poignant. And the ending is perfect!"

Grear Staff pick

"My kind of read. Great pick for staff read of the month."

NS L. (4/5)

Delightful

"A delightful read with an unusual narrator: an octopus. This is a heartfelt story of young man, adrift, looking for his place in the world as he tries to connect with his unknown father. And, of an older woman on her own who has experienced loss and tragedy in her life. As these three characters’ lives intertwine, a beautiful story of loss, connection and love emerges."

Patricia (5/5)

Great book, came damaged.

"My book came damaged (through the ship-to-store option), which really sucks. I haven't been able to get back to the store to exchange it yet but I'm sure they'll do that. The issue is that they should be checking the quality of the book before giving it to the customer. It's an obvious issue, there's a huge cut on the back cover, halfway up the back. The book itself is amazing and I'm loving it so much."

Remarkably Bright Creatures [is] an ultimately feel-good but deceptively sensitive debut about what it feels like to have love taken from you, only to find it again in the most unexpected places. . . . Memorable and tender.” — Washington Post

“A heartwarming novel to suit any mood.” — New York Times

“Infused with heartfelt humor, Van Pelt’s elegant portrait of a widowed woman who finds understanding and connection with a clever octopus is refreshingly, if surprisingly, relatable. Despite the unorthodox relationship at its core, the debut novel offers a wholly original meditation on grief and the bonds that keep us afloat.” — Elle

“The best books about grief find a way to illuminate the darkness of loss, and Remarkably Bright Creatures offers a masterclass." —  Marie Claire

“[B]rilliant upcoming novel about hope and reckoning." — Business Insider

“ [B]eautiful novel about friendship and family.”  — GoodHousekeeping.com

“As Van Pelt’s zippy, fun-to-follow prose engages at every turn, readers will find themselves rooting for the many characters, hoping that they’ll find whatever it is they seek. Each character is profoundly human, with flaws and eccentricities crafted with care. But what makes Van Pelt’s novel most charming and joyful is the tender friendship between species, and the ways Tova and Marcellus make each other ever more remarkable and bright.” — BookPage

“A debut novel about a woman who befriends an octopus is a charming, warmhearted read.” — Kirkus Reviews

"A unique and luminous book." — Booklist (starred review)

Remarkably Bright Creatures is the rarest of feats: a book that manages to be wry and wise, charming and surprising, and features one of the most intriguing and satisfying characters I’ve encountered in fiction in a very long time—Marcellus the Octopus. I don’t know how Shelby Van Pelt managed to make this uncommon tale sing so beautifully, but sing it does, and I defy you to put it down once you’ve started.” — Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney, author of Good Company and The Nest

“Shelby Van Pelt has done the impossible. She’s created a perfect story with imperfect characters, that is so heartwarming, so mysterious, and so completely absorbing, you won’t be able to put it down because when you’re not reading this book you’ll be hugging it.”
Jamie Ford, author of The Many Daughters of Afong Moy and The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet

“Truly original and touching, Remarkably Bright Creatures is a story of family, community, and optimism in spite of darkness. Prepare to fall in love with a most exceptional octopus.” — Helen Hoang, author of The Heart Principle

Remarkably Bright Creatures is a beautiful examination of how loneliness can be transformed, cracked open, with the slightest touch from another living thing. Shelby Van Pelt makes good on this wild conceit, somehow making me love a misanthropic octopus, but her writing is so finely tuned that it's a natural element of a larger story about family, about loss, and the electricity of something found.” — Kevin Wilson, author of Nothing to See Here
