Heather’s Review

Wild People Quiet by Tara Gereaux is a truly exquisite novel, set in postwar Saskatchewan.

At the heart of the story is Florence, a young woman determined to escape the future she believes is destined for her. Armed with $6 stolen from savings she and her brother earned together and a bottle of blonde hair dye, she constructs a new life for herself far from the world in which she grew up. But as events unfold, Florence is thrown into a powerful conflict between the lie she has built and her legitimate heritage. What emerges is a deeply moving story about the tenacity of racism, the bonds of family, and the pull of tradition.

This book is as beautiful as the beadwork woven throughout its telling. It gave me hours of pure pleasure and moved me. I will not soon forget it.

“This is a book of silence, identity, and the ache of belonging. Written with restraint and clarity, place and experience do the work, holding space for what’s hidden and what’s endured. The Nest is a metaphor for leaving, returning, and the possibility of healing. Gereaux has shaped a story of survival and the courage it takes to come home.”
