"A rallying cry for those who believe truth matters." —Tanya Talaga
"The voice of Canada—Carol Off—delivers a thoughtful yet searing examination of the power of words . . . and the existential need for humanity to communicate with care in these decisive and troubling times." —General Roméo Dallaire
Award-winning author and broadcast journalist Carol Off digs deep into six words whose meanings have been distorted and weaponized in recent years—including democracy, freedom and truth—and asks whether we can reclaim their value.
As co-host of CBC Radio's As It Happens, Carol Off spent a decade and a half talking to people in the news five nights a week. On top of her stellar writing and reporting career, those 25,000 interviews have given her a unique vantage point on the crucial subject at the heart of her new book—how, in these polarizing years, words that used to define civil society and social justice are being put to work for a completely different political agenda. Or they are being bleached of their meaning as the values they represent are mocked and distorted. As Off writes, “If our language doesn’t have a means to express an idea, then the idea itself is gone—even the range of thought is diminished.” And, as she argues, that’s a dangerous loss. In six wide-ranging chapters, Off explores the mutating meanings and the changing political impact of her six chosen words—freedom, democracy, truth, woke, choice and taxes—unpacking the forces, from right and left, that have altered them beyond recognition. She also shows what happens when we lose our shared political vocabulary: we stop being able to hear each other, let alone speak with each other in meaningful ways. This means we stop being able to reckon with the complexity of the crises we face, leaving us prey to conspiracy theories, autocrats and the machinations of greed. At a Loss for Words is both an elegy and a call to arms.

At a Loss for Words: Conversation in an Age of Rage
"I got a good deal on the 3 books I bought for $10. One was a write-off - F Scott Fitzgeralds wife really was in another world but definitely not as an author. At least she only wrote one book - I cannot even remember the title."
— Vern (3/5)

A must read!
"Wish I'd read it sooner . . . gives insight into Trump and Project 2025, and shows parallels to what's going on in Canada."
— Gc81 (5/5)
Definitely a must read!
"A friend gave me this book and I couldn't put it down. . . . wish I'd read it sooner! Finally gave me some understanding of the basis and rise of the nastiness in today's politics. . . . especially how 'woke' came to be such a 'bad' thing. Very important to understand before the election. There's a huge number of holds on it at our libraries, so I'm giving copies to friends too, it's that good!"
— Worried C. (5/5)
A must read for all Canadians!
"A powerful call to action . . . we have become passionate consumers . . . now is the time to be passionate citizens . . . find your truth . . . speak your truth . . . with empathy and kindness."

. More than Meets the Mind
"I was frankly a bit disappointed by """"At A Loss for Words,"""" given what an exceptional radio host Carol Off was for many years on CBC's """"As It Happens. """" While Off provides a useful and historically informed discussion of the distortion of meaning of words like 'freedom,' I would like to know more specifically about how we came to live in an age of rage. This, to me, would require a careful examination of how it was that it suddenly became acceptable for people to scream at each other, especially on radio (FOX News), and also an examination of the depersonalization and dehumanization brought about by the Internet. Maybe Off needs to write a second book to address these topics."

Great read. Chapter on
"Great read. Chapter on Choice is a must read for young men."
— 2pin H. (5/5)
Bold and accurate.
"Essential reading in the age of mass consumption of disinformation and political propaganda. Off provides well-researched evidence that Facebook and X are major contributors to the creation of distrust and animosity toward professionals- namely, journalists, educators, and healthcare workers. Comparing past and present historical trends wherein the widespread creation of fear, prejudice, and anger have driven people head-first into unwavering commitment to identity politics. The result? Mass rejection of truth, demonization of empathy, and justification of violence against marginalized groups."
