Reviews

Great title!

"This personal memoir offers a perspective I hadn’t considered or been exposed to. Love the graphics, captures the Alberta oil sands, natural landscape and human exploits to extract earth’s resources and the impacts. Raises some thoughtful questions."

Ducks

"A very compelling and striking story in the format of a graphic novel"

HNS221 (5/5)

An honest experience of working in industry

"I had to read this book for a course but I absolutely loved it. As a woman who has worked in environments like this, Beaton’s story highlights what it can be like for women in a male dominated workplace. I also admired how she covered how industry severely impacts everybody’s mental health. I truly resonated with this novel and the illustrations were beautifully done."

Jordan (5/5)

A different point of view of a place we don't see often

"It was an interesting read to see just how mini cultures form in areas and how it impacts people who are different. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the format made what was happening clear."

Melanie (5/5)

First and not last Graphic Novel.

"My first graphic novel ever, and thought it a great read about a little know area of Canadian life. I was surprised at how good a graphic novel can be and have recommended it to all my friends."

Carole (4/5)

Accurate Representation

"The graphics were lovely and the story was great. However, I have lived in the oil sands for my whole life so none of the story was surprising or really kept my interest. I would recommend it to others that have not experienced oil sands life."

Connects Gender to Extraction -

"Incredibly poignant, sardonic, and sobering. Appreciate the East Coast voice in the midst of such a hellscape. A brilliant demonstration of the intersectional nature of gender and environmental ravaging."

Thom V. (5/5)

Amazing

"This book was such an among exploration of life working in the Alberta oil sands, and the struggles that come with that. In the case of this book, specifically the struggles as a woman being outnumbered 50:1 by men. This book truly made me laugh, cry and think. I loved it, truly a 5 star read. #IndigoEmployee"

Insight into the oil industry impacts on people, women, and the environment

"Knowing so many who work in the tar sands and seeing how the loneliness and isolation can affect them, this is a great book to get insight into their situations. We also see the effects of misogyny in the field, which impacts women to a greater extent. Finally, it examines the environmental impacts of the oil industry, not just the effects of greenhouse gases, but also the direct impacts of the industry."

Heather (5/5)

visceral

"One of the best books I've ever read about labour, trauma, abuse, and people doing what they need to survive. Everything moment is so intentionally placed within the story based on theme, time, and place. The juxtaposition of a cartoon style that allows one to place themselves or their loved ones in this story and the beautifully drawn landscapes creates a story that pulls the reader in. This story messed me up for two months as a survivor. I can't recommend it enough."
