Reviews

amazing book!

"bree steps into this world of old magic along with the reader, so it felt like i was on the journey with her. as she learns about the order and the legendborn and discovers the magic of her ancestors, she starts to unknowingly walk a fine line between the two but the question remains: where does she belong? . the story is saturated with emotion, and upon reading the author's note it becomes clear why: the story is the fruit of deonn's love for the arthurian legend and grief for the loss of her own mom. deonn expertly wrote the story to simultaneously flow and critique the disparity in how racism is (or isn't) addressed in modern day retellings. it's a very layered narrative as deonn also navigates grief, trauma and romance, but didn't feel overwhelming and maintained a steady pace throughout!!"

This book was amazing!

"I loved this book so much! I love the black girl representation especially with the hair struggles (she’s so real for being annoyed when she had to wash her hair) but I also love the world building. Most of the time, when I read fantasy books im very confused but this was rarely easy to understand and well explained. I was a little annoyed with the romance. She would have very important things to say to nick but her thoughts would be oooh aaaah he’s so hot like girl we’re close to a war and your talking about his smell, blue eyes and blond hair! Anyway other than that this book was really good can’t wait to keep reading. :)"

A must-read!

"Amazing book! I adored the writing style and really connected to the characters. I felt the plot was very unique as opposed to other books in this genre!"

Juliana (5/5)

Excellent

"Read this a few years ago and the second read just cemented how brilliant it is. We need more poc main characters in the fantasy genre. I wont pretend to know if it’s a perfect rendition of black experience, especially as its heavily over-toned by a mythical society of magic and secretes but what i can tell you is how thought provoking and raw it is written. Loved every minute of it."

Best trilogy I've read this year.

"Arthurian based fiction is always such a fun read, but legendborn is quite literally one of the best I've ever read. The secret societies and powers are the perfect blend for a YA book. The trilogy has been such a Rollercoaster to read. The romance is chef's kiss and so are the friendships. I loved every minute I spent reading this."

Great book

"Great book, only thing to note is the font is quite small."

Bree will stress you out but you will love her

"This is an unflinching, unapologetic look at being black in America alongside new and old societal constructs that is extremely well done. The core of this story is not the imaginative retelling of the Knights of the Round Table as a centuries old exclusive societal club with bloodlines and duty, get turned on its head in an extremely exciting way. Bree is headstrong and dealing with so much grief that you root for her despite how much her choices stress you out! There are some gems in the YA sphere and this is one of them that I will always recommend."
