Heather’s Review

“Fredrik Backman is a master storyteller and a creator of characters so real they jump from the page and into your heart. My Friends is a deeply touching story of friendship and life. It is Backman's most ambitious work to date and confirms him as one of the very best fiction writers of our day. Not to be missed."

Reviews

Perhaps the book is an allegory

"The author is able to toss off a varied list of insights that provoke thought. But I had to give up on the book with about 100 pages left. I'm sorry, I find nothing charming about teenagers who steal, or who solve their numerous disputes by "fighting" endlessly. A main character, Louisa, is impulsive and deeply annoying (Autism Spectrum Disorder?). Perhaps the book's fault is related to the translator. Maybe the humor gets lost in the translation (as P. G. Wodehouse does to some non English speakers). As it is it lands flat for me. I don't expect a James Michener level of factual accuracy but, my God, everyone knows a valuable painting has to establish provenance or it is without value. Everyone knows this. Everyone. Other mistakes can only be described as idiotic (you don't "tackle" players in soccer) and the idiocies pile up so much that I suspect the book drifts between fiction and allegory."

My Friends, a book to keep forever in your personal library

"Loved this book, My Friends. Y Fredrik Backman. It is a story of struggle, of true friendship and the power of belief. I cried several times as I connected with the characters’ struggles. So many powerful moments and the harshness of reality lightened up with Fredrik Backman’s humour. It’s a keeper in my personal library."

Constance B. (5/5)

New Favourite!

"I loved everything about this book. The writing itself is stunning, (sharp, witty, and achingly tender). Frederik Backman balances humour and heartache so seamlessly that I found myself laughing out loud one moment and wiping away tears the next. His observations about love, friendship, and the simple act of caring for one another are so relatable and true that they sneak up on you emotionally."

Jen J. (5/5)

Friends!

"This was an engaging book from the start because it forced me to figure out what was going on! I wanted to know about the mysterious four friends in the painting. I wanted to know how the young female artist would learn to carry the torch for the group. Such extraordinary characters in such a mundane world. I enjoyed it all!"

Anne (5/5)

Laugh out loud moments!

"Loved this book! I really fell in love with the characters in the story. Although it was mostly a sad story there were so many moments that I laughed out loud and really felt a connection with the characters. Would definitely recommend."

Jen W. (4/5)

Interesting story

"Well written blending humour and poignant moments. For me this novel was too long and repetitive. I found it hard to finish but did as I wanted to see what happened."

“A powerful storyteller, Backman has done it again, creating a tale of messy life that balances loss and grief with joy and hope, and especially the power of friendship, that tugs at your emotions and, somehow, makes sense despite it all.”
