★ "With lush, emotional paintings from acclaimed Smith, Beaton’s quiet, poignant story of the necessary pairing of love and grief comes beautifully to vivid life in this moving picture book... an arresting example of how the picture format can convey pithy emotional complexity, and adults will likely find much to appreciate here too." -Booklist, starred review

★ "[A] remarkable vision of family across decades through the life of one mother who rises to the saddest of occasions and carries on." -The Horn Book, starred review
