Two great spiritual masters share their own hard-won wisdom about living with joy even in the face of adversity.
The occasion was a big birthday. And it inspired two close friends to get together for a talk about something very important to them. The friends were His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The subject was joy. Both winners of the Nobel Prize, both great spiritual masters and moral leaders of our time, they are also known for being among the most infectiously happy people on the planet, despite having experienced great personal and national suffering. From the beginning the book was envisioned as a three-layer birthday cake, the first being their personal stories and teachings about joy. Both the Dalai Lama and Tutu have been tested by extraordinary adversity, oppression, and conflict. The second layer consists of the exciting research into joy as well as the other qualities essential for any enduring happiness, like gratitude, humility, humour, compassion, generosity, and forgiveness. And the third encompasses practical exercises and guidance based on the Dalai Lama's and Tutu's own daily practices, which anchor their emotional and spiritual lives. Most of all, during that landmark week in Dharamsala, they demonstrated by their own exuberance, compassion, and even wise-cracking humour, how joy can be transformed from a fleeting emotion into an enduring way of being.

For our times
"This book is so perfect for our times. Two immensely wise individuals talk about tolerance, adversity, and emotional well being. Their empathy and compassion are deeply rooted in an understanding of our connectedness with others. In fact, they would say we can not experience joy without putting others' welfare ahead of our own."
— Beth H. (5/5)

A joy to read and learn from.
"This is a great book. I read and re-read it and gained insight into nature of universal brotherhood, hope, joy and compassion. The dialogue between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Archbishop Desmond Tutu has been beautifully articulated along with those that attended this event. The gift of Joy. - Joy to the World
"The Book of Joy is an excellent testament to the possibility of finding common ground and sharing and growing together in friendship and spirituality. It focuses on everyone's life purpose: to come to understand our individual purpose and mission in life: to support and encourage one another, to allow one another through respect and attention and intention to live up to their best potential. Both these men have very different spiritual backgrounds. Both uffered unimaginable suffering, yet both were able to transend these challenges and use their energy to tranrform others' lives and to be examples to the whole of humanity. Their message is relevant today, universal and timeless, how to use challenges and adversity to grow personally, then to serve others. The message essentially is: do what you can NOW, where you are, with what you have, as best you can. The author is very knowle dgeable and gifted and charismatic in his own right and adds his own spiritual dimension, unobtrusively, to this rich story. This book is a gift to the world, giving much needed hope."

Wonderful
"Absolutely love this book. I first listened to the audio version and was captivated. Felt I had to have the print version so I could go back and read in whole or in part whenever I felt the need to."
— Wander (5/5)
Very accurate.
"I have read a lot about the Dalai Lama but did not know much about Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It was fascinating and inspiring to read how two people from very different spiritual backgrounds hold the same values of compassion and kindness. Their gentle banter with each other was very cute and amusing. A must read if you want to actively make a choice to bring joy to yourself and others despite the currant state of affairs in the world."

HIS HOLINESS THE FOURTEENTH DALAI LAMA, TENZIN GYATSO, was born in 1935 to a peasant family in northeastern Tibet and was recognized at the age of two as the reincarnation of his predecessor, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama. The world's foremost Buddhist leader, he travels extensively, speaking eloquently in favor of ecumenical understanding, kindness and compassion, respect for the environment, and, above all, world peace.
DESMOND TUTU won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 and was only the second black person ever to receive it. In 1986 he was elected archbishop of Cape Town, the highest position in the Anglican Church in South Africa. In 1994, after the end of apartheid and the election of Nelson Mandela, Tutu was appointed as chair of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate apartheid-era crimes. His policy of forgiveness and reconciliation has become an international example of conflict resolution, and a trusted method of postconflict reconstruction.
DOUGLAS CARLTON ABRAMS is a former editor at the University of California Press and HarperSanFrancisco. He is the co-author of a number of books on love, sexuality, and spirituality, including books written with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, and Taoist Master Mantak Chia.
