A unique series continues with excitement
"Book review: 3. 5/5 ⭐️ Genre: romantasy, book 3 Themes: gods, arranged marriage, Minotaur, freedom, music I really enjoyed The North Wind, but the religious zeal in The West Wind did not appeal to me and I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue the series. So I placed a library hold and when it came through I was pleasantly surprised by the story of Princess Sarai of Ammara and Notis. Once again there are very loose ties to mythology, but don’t expect any accuracy on this front. You can recognize elements of Ariadne and the Minotaur, as well as Orpheus and his music that can charm the gods, even the four winds themselves, but I had to force myself from comparing to the original stories because this is not that. I thought of it more of a romantic fantasy with parallels to well known myths. As an independent story it had a lot going for it. There were several tangential story lines that kept the plot interesting and action packed. This included a handsome prince with an ulterior motive, a labyrinth holding more than just a monster, a second chance romance and a daughter torn between duty and love. The problematic elements were that I couldn’t figure out why a god would demean himself by being a servant to a king or the origins of Sarai’s self righteous attitude given that she required others to act on her behest. I think why I loved The North Wind was that the heroine was an independent fierce woman, and I suppose I inherently judge the precious princess with her indignation and expectation that others will follow her commands. The love she bore for her father also perplexed me given his general mistreatment of her. I think it was complicated, but there were a few loose ends that kept snagging at the back of my mind while reading. It helped that I listed to this via audiobook so that I had to move forward in the plot. Side note, the narration was spot on and these books are longer than they need to be so I enjoyed this format. Was it perfect? No, but I still enjoyed it and I think I will be finishing this series after all. Though I am beginning to wonder if the only way for a god and a mortal and a god to have a happily ever after is if one gives up their immortality. I hope the story ends with a different angle!"
