The power of this book is in how Webstad has transformed personal pain into collective, positive change. Her story demonstrates the importance of listening to survivors and acknowledging historical injustices but also shows how one voice can create a powerful national movement. The story of Phyllis Webstad encourages every single person in this country to continue learning, listening, and taking action.
—Niigaan Sinclair
I am honoured to know Phyllis and deeply grateful that she has shared her story with the world. By telling her truth, she ensures that we never forget the lasting impacts of the Indian Residential School system that continue to be felt today. Her life’s story is a testament to her strength and endurance, demonstrating the transformative power of truth, and her unwavering commitment to sharing her experiences has created a pathway for greater understanding, compassion, and healing. Through her courage, she has given this nation and our people an extraordinary gift—one that reminds us that truth and reconciliation is not a destination, but an ongoing responsibility we all share.
• Stephanie Scott, Executive Director for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation
Phyllis Webstad (née Jack) is Northern Secwépemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem'c Xget'tem First Nation (Canoe Creek Indian Band). She comes from mixed Secwépemc and Irish/Scottish heritage. She was born in Dog Creek and lives in Williams Lake, BC, Canada. Because of Phyllis and her story, a simple orange shirt has become a conversation starter and national symbol to honour Residential School Survivors and their families. She has received four honorary PhDs for her activism, and in January 2025, she was a recipient of the BC Reconciliation Award and a new award was announced: the Phyllis Webstad Emerging Leaders Youth Award.
