Julian, Klaudia, Nadiya and Giselle are each well-rounded characters in their own right, but the charm of Winterveil is in the ways they interact. The looming backdrop of a never-ending war also adds a sense of dystopian doom throughout the novel, contrasting the individuality of each character’s coming of age with worldwide consequences. The novel sets up an entire world, allowing for the story to seep beyond the walls of a typical dark academia story.
