“Bret Easton Ellis is a very, very good writer [and] American Psycho is a beautifully controlled, careful, important novel…. The novelist’s function is to keep a running tag on the progress of culture; and he’s done it brilliantly…. A seminal book.” —Fay Weldon, The Washington Post

“A masterful satire and a ferocious, hilarious, ambitious, inspiring piece of writing, which has large elements of Jane Austen at her vitriolic best. An important book.” —Katherine Dunn, bestselling author of Geek Love

“A great novel. What Emerson said about genius, that it’s the return of one’s rejected thoughts with an alienated majesty, holds true for American Psycho…. There is a fever to the life of this book that is, in my reading, unknown in American literature.” —Michael Tolkin

“The first novel to come along in years that takes on deep and Dostoyevskian themes…. [Ellis] is showing older authors where the hands come to on the clock.” —Norman Mailer, Vanity Fair

Reviews

American Psycho Book Review

"After reading American Psycho, I would have to give it 4 out of 5 stars. Patrick Bateman, the protagonist, is an extremely fascinating character. Throughout the story, we learn how he is obsessed with status, appearance and brands. It seems as if he invented “looksmaxxing” in the 1990s. The story does a great job of displaying materialism and wealth. We see how Bateman and his acquaintances show no remorse for others and are extremely self-centred. For example, whenever they encounter a homeless person, they are rude and arrogant towards them. Bateman, especially, believes he is better and like a god to them. It is also hilarious to see how seriously these Wall Street businessmen take applying face masks. One thing in particular I did not enjoy about this book was the pacing. The story takes an extremely long time to build up to the climax. The first half of the story is literally only about Patrick Bateman shopping and critiquing his friends' outfits. As the story progresses, as readers, we see how Bateman’s view of reality lessens. I will not spoil anything, but he becomes extremely violent, and it came to a point where it made me question whether it was in his head or not. To conclude my review, it is a great book. Besides the only flaw I mentioned, it really is an amazing book. I would 100% read more books by Bret Easton Ellis. He does an excellent job of highlighting the effects of consumerism and capitalism on one's head. Mr. Ellis drew inspiration from Wall Street figures, which in turn allows us to see how these finance bros act. This is an entertaining and mind-boggling novel that I would recommend to anyone who likes finance and thrillers with a splash of horror. Now this is important: only people over 15 should be reading this book! It has a lot of swearing, and it is graphic."

Gucci, Gore & Genesis: The Yuppie Nightmare Nobody Asked For

"American Psycho is one of those books where the premise outshines the execution. A razor-sharp idea about vanity, consumerism, and the decay of the human psyche under capitalism, wrapped in pages and pages (and pages) of brand-name recitations that make you wonder if Patrick Bateman moonlighted as a walking fashion catalogue. It’s brilliant satire, but it’s also exhausting and very graphic (as in it made me physically sick in some parts, and I had to stop eating). The constant repetition of designer labels starts out clever, then quickly becomes numbing. And yes, we really didn’t need entire chapters analyzing Genesis, Whitney Houston and Huey Lewis. We get it, dude, you like 80s singers. Still, beneath the tedium and shock value lies an unsettlingly smart commentary on emptiness, privilege, and performative masculinity. It’s a book that sticks with you, sometimes for the wrong reasons (legit, I think I need therapy). It leaves you wondering, was this all drug-induced, or did he really do it? ⚠️ Major trigger warnings: extreme violence, animal cruelty, murder, racism, homophobia, misogyny, and S&M. If you’re sensitive to any of those (or just don’t want to read a 400-page critique of yuppie psychosis and Rolex obsession), proceed with caution, or skip it entirely."

H. . . He just like me fr!!

"the movie i'd say is way better content wise than the book cause the book just goes on and on about some random thing but then at the same time, the book is much better because it's not like the author goes on and on about brands for no reason it's to show how vapid bateman is. so fr if u can get through that its a good book. the movie really brings it to life though. so you should probably watch the movie first and then read the book or you won't have any idea what the heck's goin on or why anything's goin on cause the words are so muddled."

Rambling

"I’m one of those people who just can’t stand to read a ramble. I didn’t enjoy the prolonged inner dialogue but I’m giving it 3 stars, as it was a part of the character building and it doesn’t deserve any less than 3 because of personal preference."

I love this book! As someone who reads books, this is my favorite book.

"An iconic book!"
