Big (Caldecott Medal Winner & Coretta Scott King Honor Title)
"Vashti Harrison's succinct text is emotionally resonant and gracefully executed, as are her beautifully rendered digital and chalk pastel illustrations, both of which keep the focus clearly on the child and her rewarding journey to self-love."—Shelf Awareness
"This book tells the story of how a little girl struggles with how everyone views her body and how they think she should be. . . instead of just letting her be! It's an empowering book with an important message for everyone."
— Sari (5/5)
Lousy preview
"Three pages of script eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee etc as preview will not sell many hooks. 60 pages of this or are other letters of the alphabet showcased?"
— A S. (1/5)

Powerful Story about Self-Love
"BIG is a beautifully illustrated, simply yet powerfully, written story about a young girl’s struggle to understand how being praised for being “a big girl” when she was a baby/toddler became such a terrible thing as she grows older. Suddenly, she has become TOO big, and she takes up TOO much space to fit in… Already a fan of her gorgeous illustrations in many books (“Sulewe”, “Hair Love”, and many more!), I was intrigued that BIG was not only her first book as both the author and illustrator but also the fact that she had just won the prestigious Caldecott Medal award for this very book! When I finally got to pick it up and read through it, there was no doubt that I MUST have this book on my inclusive bookshelf. In fact, I wished that I had this book when I was growing up as just like the little girl in BIG, I had also been told I was too chubby and fat all my life, well into adulthood. I wish I had a book like BIG earlier in my life so that I could have learned to take up space and take back the narrative when I was much younger. Sadly, I know that many, many readers will be able to relate to BIG, but I truly hope that this book will help all of us to learn to be kinder to ourselves and each other. BIG is another beautiful book about self-love which makes it perfect for not only Valentine’s Day, but also Black History Month (and always!) when we should also be choosing books to affirm Black identities."
