Inspiring Leadership to Birders of All Ages

"Melissa Hafting is an inspiring mentor to birders of all ages. In Dare to Bird she skillfully weaves a series of compelling messages through a coffee table worthy, curated collection of stunning bird images. Post COVID, birding attracting a new generation of birders, Hafting is a effective mentor promoting inclusiveness across the birding community. . She concludes with a compelling argument for the importance of preserving bird habitats and a personal story of how these magnificent creatures nursed her through a period of personal grief."

A Touching Read

"This book is beautifully written and put together with stunning imagery and heartfelt words. Hafting takes readers along her emotional journey with birds, including magical experiences in nature and its effects on her personal life. I especially enjoyed the short anecdotes scattered within the book that provides insight on the difficult lives of various bird species. The book also features many of the author's very best photographs of birds from all over the continent, from cute puffins to majestic owls. I would highly recommend ""Dare to Bird"" to birders and non-birders alike -- it might just inspire you to go outside!"

A great read

"Melissa combines fantastic storytelling with stunning complimentary visuals to demonstrate how birds are important to people on a deeply personal level. It breaks the mold of conventional nature related books by expanding beyond how birds are important to the environment and adds an often lacking human element in the importance of conservation."

Why bird? Here's why.

"Dare to Bird, by Melissa Hafting, is at first glance, and heft, a handsome coffee table book filled with magnificent photographs of birds of a wide range of species. There are common urban birds, those that inhabit wild areas within a short drive of city-dwellers, and many from remote or relatively inaccessible habitats spread across the continent, including along its shores, and then beyond, in the open ocean, and beyond that, in dense Hawaiian forests. But this book is more than a collection of very fine bird photos. It is divided into chapters, each featuring an informative, sometimes heart-felt essay, with that chapter’s images tying in nicely with the subject at hand. Some give special attention to charismatic groups such as hummingbirds and owls. (I was wowed by images of Spotted Owls in the wild, and I am particularly fond of a very stern-looking Northern Pygmy Owl. ) Other chapters describe uniquely avian topics such as flight, courtship, birdsong, and migration, or emphasize conservation, discussing anthropogenic environmental challenges and birding ethics. Perhaps most strongly, the author builds a case for social and personal significance of birding, answering the question, “Why bird?” For starters, the beauty, variety and mysteries of birds are immediate rewards. It is easy to become hooked, and easy to do, with no limits on how casual or hard-core a birder should be. Keep watch on a backyard feeder, or travel the globe seeing as many species as possible. It’s all fair game, and the shared love of birds creates an instant, deep connection with other birders, who may be anyone from anywhere in the world. However, the author points out that birding is still not as welcoming and inclusive as it should be, too slowly evolving away from a white male-dominated activity, which can be remedied by programs that are welcoming to all ages and genders, and to BIPOC and LGBTQ2SIA+ individuals. Certainly she has brought many young people on board, and describes founding the wildly successful BC Young Birders Program, which brings birders ages 12 to 18 together throughout British Columbia, some of whom have gone on to become ornithologists or other environmental scientists. Most touchingly, the author describes the hobby’s ability to console and heal, sharing the tragedies of the loss of her parents, and how birding, and birds themselves, have provided solace. It is a profound example of connecting with nature as a means of coping with grief. This book should inspire beginner birders; you are welcome within a hobby that has boundless possibilities. More experienced birders can vicariously relive the thrill of multiple lifers in a single go in accounts of a “Chicken Run” (seeing as many of the continents grassland grouse species as possible in a single trip), a pelagic boat trip out from the West Coast, or a visit to a teeming seabird colony. And for photographers, it provides lessons on how to capture the birds not as specimens, but as living, vital inhabitants of their environments and of our planet. Dare to Bird is a beautiful book by a writer who knows and loves birds, and is inviting readers to do the same. It belongs on a coffee table or somewhere else as easily accessible, because you will want to keep opening it up to read and admire—and then go birding."

Loved this book

"the photos are beyond words beautiful. the words touch my heart and make me think about why i should emulate the author and mentor youth and do more to protect birds and animals and it made me appreciate the birds more and what they do every day to heal so many of us who are walking out here broken. I also liked the author's way of championing making this wildlife hobby more diverse for all. It was an uplifting book that I will keep coming back to. The author is extremely knowledgeable about her craft which shines through as deeply as her passion while also giving the reader access to her sensational photographs."

“... the main draw [of Dare to Bird] is Hafting’s eye-catching photos, which capture a bald eagle in flight, the male greater sage-grouse’s mating dance, and hundreds of nesting common murres on a Newfoundland cliff face. It’s a deeply personal love letter to birding.” Publishers Weekly

“Like Melissa Hafting, I enjoy helping others via email. And throughout our more than seven years of such correspondence, Mel’s questions indicated a sharp and enthusiastic birder whose passion and curiosity transcended simple species identification to delve into molt status, age/sex, subspecies, and various wondrous behaviors. But email does not always fully reveal a person: what they stand for, what adversities they have faced. In Dare to Bird, through exquisite and spectacular photographs and words of pleasing cadence, you really get to know Melissa: her sense of wonder, eye for beauty, and passion for sharing her love of birds with youth and those less privileged. For the stewardship of birds and the well-being of the increasingly diverse populace she encourages to enjoy them, I highly recommend this unique and important effort. “The first time I read through this book I frequently caught myself exclaiming Yes! Melissa Hafting’s love and enthusiasm for birds (and those that seek them) is undeniable and infectious. As someone who has lived outside North America for a decade now, I found her stories and photographs cathartic. Birds are beautiful, birds are surprising, birds are a window into an ecosystem’s health, But for those that spend countless hours in their presence, each one is also a memory, a symbol of time well spent in nature with friends and family. I truly believe we are all birders at heart. Birds are for everyone, and we should all follow Melissa’s example. Find a young person and take them outside.
