Reviews

Captivating

"Powerful and unforgettable, showing both the weight of hardship and the strength it takes to rebuild a life. It is written in a way that pulls you in completely and makes you feel every part of the journey with him. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It is a piece of writing that will stick with you forever."

A must read

"This book is very heartbreaking, to experience with the writer the feelings of abandonment and the longing feeling of wanting to be loved, wanted and accepted. I couldn’t put the book down, I had to finish it all in one sitting."

Kim S. (5/5)

Hits you in the feels.

"Great book but bring the tissues! I really enjoyed this book and I think everyone would benefit from giving it a read."

JJay (4/5)

This memoir is painful, heartbreaking & incredible

"From the Ashes will forever be one of the books that I will hold onto forever. One that I will only part with to hand it down to my daughter to read someday - who is just discovering her indigenous roots and learning about the trauma that was passed down generations."

DownTheRabbitHole (5/5)

Amazing book

"I purchased this as a 2 for $20 deal and was pleasantly surprised on the quality of the storytelling in this book. I really enjoyed this book and it was told in a manner that made me not want to put it down."

PlantedFeet (5/5)

Best Book Ever

"Best book I’ve read in a long time. This book kept me interested page after page. I couldn’t wait to read it!! I would highly recommend reading this book."

Life-changing!

"Jesse Thistle opens your eyes to another world. He gives you the chance to take a glimpse inside others reality and once you read it you will look at others with more compassion and empathy. He really makes you believe that there is always good to be found in the world, you just have to look for it."

Becca (5/5)

A Canadian Essential

"An unflinching memoir, candid and raw. Mr. Thistle writes evocatively of his personal mistakes as well as the systemic biases that worked against him. I greatly appreciated the little poems scattered between the chapters as well, as it felt like a much-needed break from the seemingly endless pain and suffering Mr. Thistle has gone through. If the narrative sometimes reads as muddled, it only enhances the emotional truth here - that addiction and racism can feel like endless loops, cruel and symbiotic masters, but ones that can be overcome with great will and greater support. This book will bring out your best empathetic self. I'm an Indigo employee."

“Stereotypes and conventional understandings are about to be challenged. . . . In the world Thistle inhabits, poverty, addiction, and homelessness are all one step over a line. Some are pushed, some stumble, and some jump. . . . The places Thistle takes us come together to illustrate a common theme: we look for home wherever we can find it. Over the course of the book, Thistle builds a better world for himself, one day and one decision at a time. It is a remarkable transformation to witness, and the arc of his story will make the reader want to cheer.”
