Harold and the purple crayon

"Harold and the Purple Crayon is a timeless children's book that sparks creativity and imagination. The story of Harold drawing his world with a magical purple crayon encourages young readers to explore their own creativity. Its simple illustrations and playful narrative make it a delightful read for kids and parents alike."

A Whimsical Treasure

"Our adult children loved this book so much that when invited to a baby shower, I asked them which books were their top 5, and without a pause, each independently listed Harold! Today, they say they can now understand how easy it was to relate to daydreaming Harold and his ""magic"" crayon."

Delightful classic for the young and young-at-heart

"Bought this for a new grand-nephew in our family. This classic story had been purchased for our now grown boys when they were little and it truly never gets old ! A perfect tale to spark imagination and start conversations about about what a child can dream up."

Really Liked This One As A Kid

"I really enjoyed this book when I was little- reading about Harold and his crayon always put me in a colouring mood! I borrowed this one so much when I was younger that I thought I already owned it. Just looked through my shelf and realized that isn't the case- I'll have to rectify that. Definitely recommend!"

Terra (5/5)

Great concept

"I borrowed this book from the library when my son was an infant, and I can't recall that he necessarily had any opinion about this book, but I really thought it was cute and a really neat concept for a book. I enjoyed it. #plumreview"

“One of the world’s most beloved children’s books.” - Horn Book

"[Harold and the Purple Crayon] is one of my favorite children’s books. I’ve read it to my kids so many times." - actress, singer, and songwriter Zooey Deschanel

The story follows straightforward toddler reasoning, and ends up playfully illustrating cause and effect. The best part of the book is that its world is built entirely by a single child, sending a message that’s charming for readers of any age: Adventure can be available to anybody who thinks to seek it. - The Atlantic 65 Essential Children's Books, 2025

Crockett Johnson first came to national prominence as the author and illustrator of the popular comic stripBarnaby. Along with illustrating Ruth Krauss''sThe Carrot SeedandThe Happy Egg, Crockett Johnson also createdHarold and the Purple Crayonas well as six other adventures about the little boy and his magical crayon.
