Madelaine Drohan has written a very timely book. Canadians said "non merci" to Benjamin Franklin in 1776. And we continue saying it — loud and clear — to those who threaten our independence 250 years later!

– Jean Chretien, former prime minister of Canada

Very interesting and timely

"""Historically, a Canadian is an American who rejects the revolution. "" - Northrop Frye A fascinating account of what you could call the first attempted invasion of Canada, with a deep look into Benjamin Franklin as a person with the mythology stripped away. Following his life and goals also reveals a lot about his society and ongoing political tensions at the time: I was surprised by how deep Catholic-Protestant animosity ran (and at the same time, how easily people were willing to overlook religious differences in the name of personal gain). Overall a very relevant and insightful book."

America's Historic Obsession with Grabbing Canada Explained.

"Excellent, timely book! The research is thorough and insights into the machinations of Ben Franklin are plentiful. This book should be on every early Canadian history course. We've missed so much! Grabbing Canada has long been an American obsession. We've survived by alternating resistance with keeping our head down! Luck and fortitude."

The ""51st state"" threat has happened before. . .

"What a timely book, sparked by this former journalist's curiosity about a little-known event in our history. Researched and written before the current U. S. president's taunts, but full of fascinating insights and historical detail."
