Harrowing and powerful
"The reviews for this novel (which was published in Canada before its American release) foreshadowed that it is a hard read - the themes and scenes pack a powerful punch. The reviews were accurate - but that is not a reason to avoid this outstanding historical novel. Heather Marshall has made a literary career out of tackling difficult and unfathomable moments in Canadian history. Liberty Street unpacks one such moment (spanning decades) when women could be incarcerated indefinitely for being "incorrigible". And once incarcerated, subject to horrific medical experimentation and conditions. Using this real life scenario, Marshall introduces us to intrepid reporter Emily Radcliffe in the early sixties, who is determined to expose the women's experience, and Homicide Detective Rachel Mackenzie who is investigating a cold case twenty years later. The topics are hard, but the writing is superb as is the attention to historical accuracy. Highly recommend. Thank you to Ballantine Books and NetGalley for the DRC"
