Darkly picaresque.... Jacobsen persuasively argues that the mindset of the former Nazi scientists who ended up working for the American government may have exacerbated Cold War paranoia.

Worth the read.

"Fascinating history that a lot of people aren't aware of."

A great read, Annie Jacobsen is a genius!

"What a crazy ride this book is. It's hard to believe the States went as far as they did in order to get their hands on some top German scientists. Annie Jacobsen is a phenomenal researcher; her dedication to uncovering this story is mind-blowing. It's an easy read, there are a lot of people to keep track of in this book but the author continually reminds you of who they are and what role they played so it's not too much to handle. A great read if you enjoyed Oppenheimer (he's not a character in the book) and if you're interested in how the whole project worked behind the scenes."

Natalie C. (4/5)

Great interesting read.

"Enjoying this glimpse into a history I was unaware of."

Michelle (5/5)

A sad look behind the curtain.

"A must read to understand politics, foreign policy, and how the media works to shape your understanding. Be skeptical of everything."

Deedee (5/5)

The secrets are just now coming out. Wait for the 100 year ones.

"The start of the cold war that continues to this day. Us humans are doomed to a war forever. No one is satisfied to live a happy safe life. Religion is the # 1 cause of all this and will never change."

Excellent History but Also a Perspective on Human Nature

"In the aftermath of World War II, when Nazi war criminals were being brought to justice, the Cold War came about. The East versus West race for military supremacy was on. In an effort to get the edge on the Soviets, the Americans saw opportunity in quickly acquiring the professional servicers of Nazi scientists, engineers and technicians – most with very shady pasts - before the Soviets snatched them away for similar reasons. Several of these scientists were world experts in their fields, e. g. , chemical warfare, biological warfare, rocket science, and picking their brains by giving them contracts/work was thought to be most beneficial to the American cause. This program was known as Operation Paperclip. The author recounts this program with amazing thoroughness. She singles out twenty-one German scientists, most of them Nazis, and follows them from the end of the war to the end of Operation Paperclip and the aftermath. I found this book very hard to put down. The author’s prose is clear, lively, very well-researched and tremendously captivating – in short, exceedingly well-written. As a bonus, the reader gets a bit of a glimpse into human nature, i. e. , how generally good people can turn vicious and cruel towards innocent individuals given the right circumstances. This book should appeal the most to those with an interest twentieth century history, particularly the Cold War."

Impeccable research

"Very interesting, exhaustively researched although a bit moralistic. Clearly the author doesn't agree with the US taking advantage of the German scientific knowledge and skills. If one ignores the political beliefs of the author it is still a very interesting book."
