Rick Mercer Final Report Is Great Ranting

"O Great Zamboni In The Sky…… We are sure gonna miss the rants from Canada’s philosopher, explorer, conscious, comedian, and all round swell guy Rick Mercer. But at least we have this volume of his last batch of thoughts, with an extra side order of behind the scenes stories, to remember the man in the graffiti alley. Rick Mercer is a Maritimes comedian who rose to fame and became part of the satirical news show This Hour Has 22 Minutes. He then branched out into other creations, and eventually ended up on his show, The Rick Mercer Report. It was a long running vehicle for him, part satire news, part a travelodge look at Canada. One of the most popular segments was when Mercer would stride through Toronto’s famous graffiti alley, where all the walls are covered with beautiful art, and he would rant to the camera about…. well, something. And that something was whatever got Rick mad or sad or pissed off or pumped up or annoyed or excited or whatever at that moment. Which makes for fascinating viewing to say the least, and now in this collection, fascinating reading. Mercer has well over 100 rants included here, going back years of the show. And while you may not agree with everything he sprouts on about, and a few times he even contradicts himself, his reasoning and passion is very evident with every word. As is his fierce patriotism for his home and native land, Canada. The rants range from his dislike of some politicians and their tactics, to how we should be doing more to help suicidal kids to Canada’s history of not accepting and accepting refugees. Mercer backs up his thoughts with facts, and that special quality of being right that so many commentators lack, helps fuel his seemingly endless passion. That aspect of Mercer’s soliloquies, his passion, also showcases his massively huge compassion. A common thread throughout his writings is sympathy for our fellow human, and how we should all practice The Golden Rule: Do Onto Others. It is a simple lesson that we all seen to forget at one time or another, or in some people unfortunately, all the time. And to make these lessons he offers help stick, Mercer keeps the rants short. In television, and later replayed in youtube form, the rants were designed to be short and mostly easily digested. Mercer admits in the book that writing them can be difficult, since the first drafts are quite long, and he has to whittle them down to the point and to fit time. He thankfully resists the idea of expanding any of his mini essays, something other writers have down to mixed results. And the very few that do contradict themselves can be chalked up to his views evolving over time, since these rants do go back over several years. Throughout Final Report, Mercer also gives interesting behind the scenes stories, which are several pages longer then the rants. He discusses his friendship with singer Jann Arden, who was a frequent guest on the show, and a crazy mishap due to his working with legendary director Norman Jewison. My fav is how they got Canadian literary icon Pierre Burton to roll a joint for a segment. We all know Rick Mercer will still be around, preaching and teaching, just like this, because he ranted so to us. And we thank you for that, O Great Zamboni In The Sky! Scoopriches"

A Keeper!

"Rick Mercer recounts his 15 years of The Rick Mercer Report, a weekly commentary on life across this big, diverse country of Canada. Famous for his weekly rants, this book has a collection of rants that stir up reminders of people, corporations, places and government actions and elected officials along with some great Canadian Icons. The challenge of producing the show when events they arrive to cover are not as advertised, the dedicated help of Jann Arden who became a regular when regulars weren't a part of the show, Celebrity Tips that included Pierre Burton doing a ""how to roll a joint"" episode all were wonderful to read about. 2013 - plastic money, Dec 1 2009, How to Use an Escalator, Snow Tires - Nov 25, 2008 all had me laughing so hard! Sorry to see this show sign off for good on April 10, 2018. The book will bring lots of insights and reminders of what is important to this country."

"I was so excited about this book! I’ve loved watching Rick Mercer on TV since I was a kid. He’s hilarious! This book collects his best rants from his show. He has a segment on The Mercer Report where he does a 90 second rant about something. It can be about anything from politics to celebrities to how people drive. I loved reading the rants. I have heard many of them on TV but they’re so great to read. They are short, with each one only about about a page long, so it is easy to flip through this book. There are also some personal stories from Rick about filming the show included in the book. I love these kinds of behind-the-scenes stories about him and the show. It really makes you feel like you were part of the show. I loved this book! It’s a must-read for fans of Rick Mercer! I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review."

RICK MERCER co-created and performed on CBC's This Hour Has 22 Minutes, created and starred in Made in Canada, and created and starred in Talking to Americans, the most-watched comedy special in Canadian television history. He went on to host the hugely successful Rick Mercer Report for 15 seasons.
