"A fine novel, as bitter and remorseless as her last poems--the kind of book Salinger''s Fanny might have written about herself ten years later, if she had spent those ten years in Hell." --The New York Times Book Review

What a beautiful book!

"Inside and out, this book is absolutely indredible. This hardcover edition is beyond amazing and the quality reflects perfectly the unique mind that wrote the book. I would recommend endlessly!"

Huge let down

"I was wanting to read this novel for a long time. I really struggled through the entire thing. Nothing even remotely exciting happened until more than half way through the book. The entire first half was just a lot of rambling with no direction. I love the concept and what the novel stands to represent; however it had so much potential and nothing was created from it."

A Must Read

"This is an excellent example of first person writing. I love the brutal honesty of the main character’s thoughts. It’s a dark read, but not lacking wit. Plath has delivered an accurate account of mental illness. Having spent some time in the “Bell Jar” myself, I understood the character (Esther) and was comforted by her madness. I felt less alone in my own illness."

Read this Book

"Heartbreaking and honest. A refreshing style of writing. A slice of what life was like for women 1950s America."

GreatLakeSwimmer (5/5)

One of my faves

"What can I say about one of my favroite books? To me, it's one of the greatest depictions of mental health ever in literature, whilst also being darkly humorous and enlightening. I've read it many times and I'm always comforted by Plath's prose and writing style which rings clear of her roots in poetry."

A Favourite

"This novel was assigned reading to me by my English teacher when I was in my last year of high school, about to start university. I think often about that English teacher and how she sat with every student in our last year to hand-pick which book she thought would suit us for our culminating project. As an over-achiever all throughout my education, she thought The Bell Jar would be a good choice for me as I prepared to join the rest of the big fish. I can honestly say that reading this book at that time in my life shaped a lot of my decisions that were to come in the following formative years. This is a well written, sad look into Sylvia Plath's life, but told beautifully as always."

Nadia (5/5)

My favourite book ever.

"I read The Bell Jar two years ago and the words of Sylvia Plath still haunt me--in a good way. This book is an exceptional piece of work, I definitely recommend it. #plumreview"

Claudia0000 (5/5)

Beautifully written.

"The overall structure of the novel is light, with no complicated sentences like the other classics. But it will leave you impacted, for sure. A depiction of mental health that I have never seen before."

Lababe (5/5)

Classic

"This novel took my by surprise, the turn that Plath takes in the novel blindsided me a little. To those who are concerned that it will be a slow start, it is. But it is worth your patience. Plath effortlessly describes feelings that most can only hope to explain. There are many layers of the story to peel back and the themes, messages and motifs are ones that are still relevant today."

"An amazing read. Light, simple, easy to follow writing with such a dark story line."
