From #1 bestselling author Genevieve Graham, “the reigning queen of Canadian historical fiction” (Kristen Harmel, #1 New York Times bestselling author) comes a dazzling novel set at an elegant hotel in Toronto in 1929 about a young chambermaid, a handsome waiter, and a murder that will reverberate for a century.
Welcome to the Dominion, where secrets lurk behind every locked door.
1929: Rosie Ryan wants nothing more than to escape the poverty of The Ward, Toronto’s roughest neighbourhood, and become a chambermaid at the brand-new Dominion Hotel. Until she meets Damien, that is—a charming and ambitious waiter who promises her a better life—and adds him to the top of her list. The Dominion offers her a chance to do well, but behind the gleaming chandeliers and polished marble lurk dangerous secrets involving its most notorious guest, a wealthy gangster who’s about to profit from The Crash that will decimate the economy. When a friend is murdered, Rosie finds herself tangled in a web of betrayal—one that just might cost her everything.
Present Day: City building Inspector Bridget Kelly is assigned to scrutinize the recent renovations at the elegant old Dominion Hotel, a task she relishes as a lover of history and architecture, and that gets even better once she starts working with a brilliant and fascinating archivist. But when a routine inspection uncovers mysterious boxes, locked doors, and secret corridors, bringing to light a long-buried clue to a decades-old murder, her inspection is thwarted, and threats rise round her on every side. Bridget soon realizes someone doesn’t want the truth to surface—and they’ll do anything to keep it buried.
Spanning nearly a century, The Chambermaid’s Key is a gripping dual-timeline novel about ambition, betrayal, and the secrets that bind us across generations.

“As a passionate admirer of grand old hotels, I was eagerly whisked back into the charms of the gilded age while reveling in this new gorgeously told murder mystery by Genevieve Graham. I don’t know how she does it!” — ELINOR FLORENCE, #1 bestselling author of Finding Flora
"It's hard not to love a book when you LOVE the setting! The exciting stories of both Rosie Ryan and Bridget Kelly were enthralling. The mixture of the history I know and the familiar places were suburb. I loved both Rosie and Bridget and all the interesting side characters. This was truly a great historical ride!"

My favourite Graham novel!
"This is a wonderful story of past mystery that unfolds along side a modern day crime. Told through dual timelines, the pacing is on point and the tension is tightened to perfection. It's my favourite Graham novel yet and I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a side of romance and mystery."

Amazing book!
"An amazing read from Canada's Queen of Historical Fiction, Ms. Genevieve Graham! I wanted to read it fast from start to finish, as it was so entertaining, but I also wanted to read it slowly, to savour it, if that makes sense? Both timelines are equally enjoyable. Thank you Ms. Graham for bringing Canada's history alive, in an enjoyable way! Hopefully, Ms. Graham will let her readers know when her next book is to be released, as then a countdown can occur"
— Susan B. (5/5)
Suspense-filled and masterfully written novel
"This book grabs you from the start - different from Genevieve's other books, yet still with that great literary core that keeps you turning the next page. A crime drama and mystery novel mixed in with true facts from Canadian history, this book is a winner!"
— Shannon E. (5/5)
Great story-Toronto history
"This is a great story especially if you are a fan of history in general and Canadian history. I loved all of the characters in this story, and the Irish immigrant history in Toronto. Also a great read if you like to hotels like the Royal York in Canada."
— Lynn E. (5/5)
Must Read!
"I am a fan of Genevieve Graham’s novels- I’ve read every one I can get my hands on! The Chambermaid’s Key is, in my opinion, one of her very best books. As always meticulously researched, full of vivid details, well drawn characters and the element of suspense. It’s a must read!"

One of my favourite reads of 2026
"I am at a loss as to how to describe this book except to say that it is one of the most incredible, well-written historical fiction book I have ever read. I absolutely loved it. It is a dual POV novel alternating between 1929 and 2024 and Genevieve travels between the 2 timelines seemlessly. The novel is set in the Dominion Hotel in downtown Toronto across from Union Station. It is based on the Fairmont Royal York Hotel but the author changed the name for the novel. I don't want to give too much away but after reading this novel, I really want to book a weekend stay at the Fairmont Royal York."

A five star read!
"Wow! If I could give a book more than five stars, this would be the one. The Chambermaid’s Key by Genevieve Graham is my favorite book of hers! Rosie, what a life she lived! She was growing up in The Ward and all she wanted was to work at the Dominion Hotel. When her dream comes true she finds out the job she dreamed of is more than she bargained for. I loved that this book was told in a dual timeline (a century later) because we met Bridget and her grandmother. Bridget is an inspector and currently working on a project inspecting the Dominion Hotel. I don’t want to divulge too much information to give away that story but I do need to let you know there are secrets, locked passageways, the mob, corrupt employers, mystery and a love story. Also the Dominion Hotel is based on the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. I will definitely need to go and visit again to see the mementos and photos of the past. If you are a fan of historical fiction this is a must read!"

Fictional yet unforgettable
"I didn’t just read The Chambermaid’s Key, I felt it. Genevieve Graham has delivered a masterclass in literary witnessing, shifting her focus to a dual-timeline mystery that feels both urgent and deeply researched. While the "whodunnit" element kept me turning pages late into the night, it was the raw history of Toronto that truly stayed with me. This book strips away the polished facade of the Royal York Hotel to reveal the grit and the secrets held within its walls. What makes this story so impactful is how it honours the diverse, working-class families who actually built this city. The author takes us back to a time when Toronto was a place of immense struggle and secrets, highlighting voices that are rarely found in our history books. Whether you are here for the strong female protagonists or the atmospheric 1920s setting, you will leave with a new perspective on the city we walk through today known as Toronto. This is storytelling at its best, using a fictional mystery to uncover a very real, very diverse past."

Loved it!
"I am definitely a fan of this author, I admire how she takes subjects that can be tough and gives them a light touch but still a meaningful read. This book is a dual timeline story with one set in 1929 with Rosie Ryan, a poor Irish girl living with her grandmother and one set in the present day with Bridget Kelly. At the centre of both story lines is the Dominion Hotel (aka Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto), Rosie has obtained a job as a chambermaid and is saving for the future when all does not go according to plan. In the present day Bridget is a building inspector working on renovations to the Dominion Hotel and when things don’t seem right she sets to investigate. There is lots happening in this book and lots to keep the reader engaged, history to learn and characters who will weave themselves into your heart. So glad I read this book and highly recommend to anyone who has an interest in Canadian history or just plain enjoys historical fiction."
