It might be for you, but it wasn't for me

"«The Fear,» by Natasha Preston, is a young adult novel clearly intended for young adults reading their first novel. If that's you, don't read any more of this review, but go grab the book and give it a try! You might love it. If you are a more jaded reader - here's my honest opinion: The main character, a 17-year-old, is acting as the heroine of a scary movie from the '80s. She makes every dumb move on the list, makes assumptions, jumps to conclusions, and hobnobs with the person she suspects of being the murderer… because she HAS to find out the truth, and she can’t let go of her ideas. I didn’t like the main character. She was offensive, narrow-minded and judgemental. Yet, of course, she understands MUCH better than the police. She is, in fact, the ONLY one who really understands the murderer and their way of thinking. So, ignoring all the blatant warnings, red flags, and dead classmates, she pursues The Truth alone. Not going to spoil the ending, but I found the build-up to the final scene cringe-worthy and the ending the only logical and natural finale possible."

"At first when I saw the book it immediately caught my attention and I was not disappointed, it was a great read and had me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book, and although the ending left me a bit disappointed it was still really good."

Not Bad, But Not A Favourite

"A stupid meme has caught the attention of Rock Bay, a small fishing town, where residents have begun sharing their biggest fear on social media. But soon, Izzy's classmates start turning up dead in the ways that scared them the most and she knows it's not just a harmless trend, there is something sinister at work. After finding the first dead body, Izzy quickly becomes determined to find the truth and stop the killer as everyone who reposted could be a target, including her best friend and cousin. The concept feels like it was pulled straight out of a Black Mirror episode. Eerie, yet realistic. The Fear jumps between two point of views, Izzy and the mystery killer. Personally, I didn't care for the murderer's dark and twisted perspective, but I can see how readers would find it intriguing. The main protagonist comes off as a caricature, continuously making dumb and dangerous choices a real person would most likely avoid at all costs. While we're supposed to think Izzy is brave, her poor decision-making skills come across as lazy writing instead. I also didn't care for the ending. That said, this book is a quick read."

Imagine jumping on a trend where you post the scariest way to die and then people actually end up dying that way. I was emotionally invested in this one, and every plot twist had me feeling all types of ways. That ending though!!!"
