A thrilling anthropological adventure story with a profound and tragic vision of what happens when cultures collide—from the bestselling author of National Book Award–nominated modern classic, A Little Life
“Provokes discussions about science, morality and our obsession with youth.” —Chicago Tribune
It is 1950 when Norton Perina, a young doctor, embarks on an expedition to a remote Micronesian island in search of a rumored lost tribe. There he encounters a strange group of forest dwellers who appear to have attained a form of immortality that preserves the body but not the mind. Perina uncovers their secret and returns with it to America, where he soon finds great success. But his discovery has come at a terrible cost, not only for the islanders, but for Perina himself.

"Don’t recommend. Read after little life with high expectations. Very boring."

An Intriguing Read!
"Hanya Yanagihara has such a talent when it comes to writing characters that readers get emotionally attached to. With this book, I really liked the way the story was told. The duality of the explorers journal in contrast with his best friend’s annotations made this story way more interesting than it otherwise would have been. I definitely would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Hanya Yanagihara’s other works. #indigoemployee"

Unlikeable narrator
"I wish I could love this book but I just don't. The narrator is unbearable. The actual plot is also definitely not for everyone. . read at your own risk."
— Ohdrey (2/5)
Dark and Difficult Book
"Deals with themes of the white saviour, environmental destruction, and who to believe regarding assault. Excellent, slow build read."
— Sarah (4/5)
Great, but probably not for everyone
"I’ve been meaning to pick up this book for months, and I’m so happy that I did. I found it to be beautifully written and very interesting- I couldn't put it down! However, due to some of the disturbing themes it discusses (such as colonization, moral relativism and sexual exploitation), I would struggle to recommend it to “just anyone”. Before picking the book up, I would advise a reader to make themselves aware of this subject material."
— Laura (5/5)
Beautifully written and very interesting
"Great book but probably not for everyone."
— Sofia (5/5)
Deserves a 4. 5
"This book left me reeling. Exceptionally and eloquently written, Yanagihara weaves a tale that leaves you questioning everything."
— ImlikeTT (4/5)
Gripping but somewhat unsatisfying
"The book was difficult to put down, but I ultimately found the ending unsatisfying (and unsettling) was this book about relativism? predatory behaviour? both? I'm not sure."
